Well I've had a quote of £25 for 24hra trailer hire but not sure how happy my c5 would be with it on the back and I would probably need to put a fair few bricks in the back of the car to balance the weight out and we are talking a HDi90 c5 here!

Whipped out the C5 (Mk1) manual, The 2.0HDi 90hp can carry a gross trailer weight (with brakes) of the following specs:
10-12% incline 1500kg (1400kg if C5 is estate)
8-10% incline 1600kg (1500kg)
Inclines of up to 8% 2000kg (1900kg)

The Xantia V6 is just shy of 1500kg, so as long as you're avoiding inclines of 8%+ then you should be fine :)

Also, when was your driving license issued? Post 1st Jan '97, then you can't legally on a standard license (as the xantia weighs more than the c5 - and that's without the trailer), so would need a B+E license.

That's why I'm thinking of loading the c5 with 500kg of bricks as it should make it more stable and avoid that issue and keep me under 3500kg :)

Don't think it avoids the legality of it, as it's based on unladen weight. I don't know what the police do to check though, probably have a database of the unladen weights or something which they base it on. As I'm guessing they're not in the habit of taking people towing cars to a weigh-bridge :)

I thought it just needed to be under 3.5 train weight as having a heaving towing vehicle is only a reccomendation as far as I know.

Depends on when your licence was issued:
https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/driv ... ou-can-tow" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If this year, then it's just the combined weight (wonder if the test has changed a bit for it to be relaxed). Post 1st Jan '97 then the trailer can't weight more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. Pre-1997 and then it's no worries :)

Will, in my experience every other country in the world is an order of magnitude at least more godforsaken than this one!

There are only a very few exceptions...

Sweden's trailer rules are more bizarre.... on a standard B license you can carry a trailer up to 750kg, or drive a vehicle up to a gross weight of 3500kg, however you cannot tow a trailer greater than 750kg even if the car + trailer weight is within 3500kg. Have you checked about hiring a single car transporter? as you'd be legal on that. e.g. http://www.transporterhire.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think the rule is if you have a cat B license you can tow a trailer up to the kerb weight of the car, as long as you don't exceed 3500kg total. To tow more than the kerbweight of the towing vehicle, which is legal but not advised, and depends on the manufacturers towing limit then you need B+E. When I had the C5 its kerbweight was 1650 IIRC and the caravans max weight was 1450 kg so 3000kg overall plus the weight in the car, me, mrs, cd,s maps etc. I recon you would be legal with that on a cat B. However to tow a trailer loaded with a xantia, say 1500kg for xantia, probably at least 500kg for the trailer and straight away you are over the 3500 kg and over the cars towing limit. Put another 500kg blocks in the boot, would see you in big trouble if stopped and checked my mr Plod. The C5 wouldn't need extra weight to help it ow, mine was the best tow car I ever had, and I have had a few

A just run in 174!! and yes thats THOUSANDS!

I think there will be a lot of work to get it right and the biggest job that i may be able to do is the cam cover gasket if thats whats leaking :( Though i do know a local-ish mobile mechanic and very great bodyshop and Vince of course but i think all this will push a fair few quid into her and i would rather get her good enough to start a new life and not be a perfect minter when it comes time to sell her on as i think thats the plan, get some work done and then move her onto an owner who has the space to work on her :)
