Rubbish to your asserm Xac..

HDi 90 are as good, Ive driven a few, and they do perform better then the XUD, and the 110 IS better again.. Theres no sensor issues, theres no turbo issues..Ive not touched my Cam or Crank sensor. No different to a petrol engine!!

Yes the Tank Pumps can play up, but once changed are fine. Again, most HDI should be on a second pump by now.

Yes the electro vaccum valves can play up but easyilly swapped.. Hdi easilly 30bhp increased by fitting a small box.. on a TD you have to mess about bit by bit with the fuel and turbo settings..

You obviosly drove a crap 90 bhp.. the two Ive driven were both quite sprightly.

Most XUD should be on their second gaskets, but the HDis rarely kill them..

Anyway, We ALL have an opinion.. Some of us DO like the XUD, and I have to admit for complete gaurenteed reliability mechanical fueling is the way to go... But for quiter running, better fuel efficiency the HDi is good for it.

I bought mine at 156k, Ive done nearly 100k in it, and the only issue Ive had has been the fuel pump on the engine, and XUD pumps can have issues too, so they arent perfect.

Oh, and the rust in the Cill issue, is NOT confined to S2 cars... S1 cars can have it too, but to a lesser extent.. So that doesn't work either.

I've driven several 90s and they were gutless compared with my XUDs, you must have driven some poor XUDs if you found the 90 HDI sprightly!
So you have to buy a small box? Less than £10 are they? Nope, just had a look on ebay and bloody hell they range from £110 to nearly £400!
With just a couple of turns of few screws and the XUD can be taken to 135-145hp.
Most XUDs I know of have reached over 250K on their original gaskets and there's plenty available well below that.

citroenxm wrote:There is a bit of space and faffing to clean the oil up... thats the messy bit.

But I think the ease of fill and go, and the HDi 52mpg (which despite what ANYONE says, NO Xud td in a Xantia gets near it!) its just no contest..
Best I ever did was 53.0mpg in my XUD. Average over 4 years was only 42mpg. Average on HDi after 10 months is only 47mpg but have been up to 59.5mpg in that. Dare say, it could do a tad better even.

Let's end it here and now.

Just get a 1.9 TD XUD ZX and you'll be almost as quick as an HDi in acceleration if not up with it and you're get 51mpg on a very fast run to Austria!! Sylv was doing 180-190km/h on the unrestricted sections of the autobahn past Stuttgart and Ulm.

The first tank was 55.92 litres at 569 miles. Me driving for all that time and quite steadily. It only achieved 46mpg for that part of the run - work that out!

Paul. You're a great guy but you need to go and see your doctor about your blood pressure.

Calm down, man! You get so excited.

That's not an embarrassment icon. That's Paul's head about to explode because of the pressure in it!!! BANG!

I've had 7 XUDs and 2 or 3 HDis now. HDi is much better. I have the Berlingo with a 90 in it, and I owned two XUD cars while I've had it. Prefer the HDI every time, 90 or 110.

I actually prefer a good mid-sized petrol turbo over any diesel motor, but needs must eh?

I love my 2001 HDi Xantia to bits, it's comfortable and lovely to drive, very economical too.... I just can't help thinking about how much cheaper to run an older XUD engined Xantia would be if it were run on waste veg oil, something an HDi engine just can't do.

Has anybody here got any experience with driving the older diesels and the newer ones? It may not be worth it if they are unreliable or do terrible MPG. Do they enjoy supping poor quality waste oil?
I did this a few years ago, I went from a Xantia HDI estate to a Mk2 1.9 TD Xantia so that I could run on chip fat/Bio diesel. Whilst it saved me plenty of money on fuel it is a difficult move to get used to. The HDI is a much better driving experience and can be run on bio diesel if you have access to it locally, I've used 1.9th, 90bhp and 110bhp HDI's on bio diesel without any problems.
Forget waking the neighbors in the morning cranking up a 1.9td and keep your HDI!

With the notable exception of the 2.1 XUD, it comes somewhere between the two for economy and is much smoother at low revs than the Hdi.

I don't think the EPIC ones are as good, I have only had the Bosch type in the XM, the only real bind with them is the head gasket. Not many XMs of any denomination about now.

On an aside.. ive got xm's with bosch mechanical and lucas mechanical fuel system and its actually very noticeable that the lucas fuel system is actually smoother and far quieter then the bosch car.. the bosch is louder.. but the bosch is also longer lived and tougher..

Anyway. This isnt about xm and 2.1 12v engines its about helping a lad to decide to stay forwards or go right backwards...
