my last c5 hdi 95 bhp 2002 i had for 8 years had only done 55000 miles i past it on to my grand son .he did 1000 miles in it and said the clutch was slipping i took it out and i could not get it to slip but he insisted it had done it on him 3 times so not to see him stuck in the bad weather i put a new clutch in for him on looking at the clutch i took out it was less than half worn and would have don another 50000 miles it took a good day and a half to do and cost .£100 from a motor factor .ITS NOT THE NICEST JOB ON A CONCRETE FLOOR UNDER A CAR PORT IN WINTER .

Car port ! bloody luxury !
I seem to take me about a day and a half to do a Xantia one these days, getting old and slow :) I used to have a BX/ZX gearbox out and on the floor in two hours, but theres more stuff to take off on the later cars.
I would definitely put a clutch in that car, your bloke sounds good for £13 per hour.
BXs since 1993 built 1.9 TZD turbo, got a S2 Xantia estate, brilliant car! 2013, Xantia HDI LX 110 2000 new car with 122,000, l C2 HDI Rusty rocket, C3 Picasso HDI new to me.

I live in London and 60 quid an hour is as low as you can get for a properly equipped set up . Sometimes you even have to pay vat as well. If I had a 13 pounds an hour guy available my HDI would be almost spot on by now.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say get shot of the car you've had your moneysworth out of it! Seriously it depends what you expect from a car. Because I spend all day taking gearboxes out of cars in all weathers I lease a nice shiny new car with full maintenece.(can't spell) The tyres alone cost £220 each so I really don't want surprise bills. I've spent the same as Taffy has on his xantia this year but it's top-spec Saab9-3 aero(one of the last before they went skint) not a 12 year old car. I'm really not sentimental over cars, probably because I work with them and have owned so many good bad and indifferent ones over the last 40 years. Finally(sorry I'm going on) £13 an hour is ridiculous money for the arduous, dirty frustrating work that we do. I really, really wouldn't do it for that sort of money!

Can you put a solid flywheel and clutch from a Xantia in? Just wondering...

I agree with the advice to drive it gently and don't allow it to slip, if you can bear to do this the clutch could last many more thousands of miles. The car does have s DMF but you may get away without replacing it. My C5 2.0 Hdi has done around 190k and the clutch and DMF are still good, my 406 it at 215k and also still good.
