Can't understand why you guys get bored with the C5. Why is that?
I used to get bored with the OLD C5, but the new shape is a joy to drive. Aberdeen to Looe in Cornwall, Aberdeen to London, Aberdeen to York etc etc, and still love to get behind the wheel. With sport setting on the windy local roads it can be fun too. Are you sure we are speaking about the same car?

c5 v6 estate with LPG.

thats the car i'll be replacing my HDi with eventually. For the time being though, my HDi is going to stay for as long as possible, i've even made the promise that IF the engine gives up before the body i'll put a V6 engine in there with a manual box and LPG.

No i don't want to.. been there with lpg got it on my v6 xm but laws are supposed to be getting tighter on the installs.. then there's loss of boot space or loss of range for a smaller tank so no i don't want to go lpg on a daily unless its massive and the boot is sooooooooo big a tank won't effect loss of space. And i don't want a hearse estate either. ..

Citroenmad. . Yes. The other car that tickles me nicely is the latest proper mark two or citroen mark 3. C5. Or the Germanic c5. They are cheap already for what they are but need to come down a bit more yet. But we DOO like them. But they need to be under a grand before i get one. ..

You won't do better an XM with a Bosch pump Paul, when I occasionally get to drive mine it feels so smooth at low revs compared to the C5 and the 406 its almost like driving an auto, and they have a nice solid feel. Having driven them continually for 15 years I used to them and didn't fully appreciate them, but I do now I'm not, if you follow me.

Does that still cover your basic personal injury insurance in Australia?
No.
$474 registration (= your road tax)
$450 upwards third party compulsory insurance (add 25% for suburbia)
$450 first party insurance to agreed value of $4K, double in suburbia.

2000 Berlingo is $2200/yr taxed and insured as a commercial vehicle.

Petrol is 160c/litre or £1.12

Time to move to New Zealand and slash those car running costs!  Lots more Citroens there too...

Quite staggering what you're paying.

The only time I intend returning is to hoy the old man's personal effects into a skip when he shuffles off. Australia suits me fine.

My point was more that the costs (UK or Australia) are still - in the context of everything we get bled for - reasonably accessible. Where our gross incomes go is interesting to look at on a spreadsheet. A good way to get annoyed with ones' weaknesses in spending.

Just had a quick read through this thread, and interesting to read peoples thoughts. I dont think any of you can give a genuine unbiased opinion, and probably neither can I :D
One thing I can say is that buying a Renault and saving money DO NOT go along in the same sentence . I am finding Renault parts cost are hugely more than other manufacturers in most cases. Dont get me wrong, the Laguna is a super car when it works correctly, unfortunately they always break a lot.
The MK11 C5 is a pretty decent car and head to head against a Xantia, is much faster and a bit bigger.
The thing is you can buy parts for the Xantia, if you know where to look for very reasonable costs, you know how to repair them, it has the most comfortable ride of any of the above cars.
I can only say make your choice wisely, but dont kid yourself you will save money, £250 buys very few modern car parts.

Interesting; a Laggy V6 estate is my shortlist car against catastrophic loss of the Xantia (ie; if the car were totalled I'd buy one of the above within a day or two).

Are they really that far beyond the Xantia in terms of competent service issues? That is concerning to hear...

I've owned a MKII Laguna and currently drive an 02 C5. Comparing them like for like is easy. Laguna, good looking car, low seating, handles very well, very well spec'd, very expensive spares (£170 for rear discs with integral ABS rings anybody?), dodgy electrics and leaked like a sieve from the sunroof cos the drains were too small). C5, pig ugly, wallowy in the corners but comfy in straight lines, better build quality than the Lag II, comfy interior that passengers like, better heating/AC than Renault as well, electrics slightly better but not much. If you are hell bent on a diesel Lag II then get a Lag II phase 2 with the 2.0DCi engine, its a lot more reliable than the 1.9 or 2.2 chocolate variants. But if Citroen have ironed out the C5 MK1 with the facelift version then it would bring things back in favour of the C5 for me.
