I thought I would let you know the outcome of this problem, mandrake was quite correct it was the radius arm bearings but they didn't fail in the time honoured way, they had not disintegrated and the arms were not leaning, at least not noticeable and the tyre wear was not uneven, one bearing was still whole but rusted solid. When I eventually replaced them I still had on the XM accumulator spheres that I tested it with, you could move the suspension up and down until it touched both bump stops - I bet the ride would have been good.
