Re: Diesel pump sprocket and timing Question

Post by John Plum »

Thanks Sean and Citronut, for help.
I removed the crankshaft pulley, yes.
Understood, what you say about TDC and two crank rotations, and so yes cam is properly timed.

Now, at last I have my eye on the ball:  Having een hurried earlier by planned departure with children by car for Easter.

I looked again at pump peg holes with mirror, and discovered more holes - I stupidly allowed myself to be misled in poor light and access.
So, pump now pegged in two places, bolts nicely aligned. :?
Belt back on tensioned and rechecked timing.
Happy With setup.

Await battery to be charged overnight - not in a rush, quite happy.

Noticed sensor situated on cam cover with air pipe to fuel pump (taking reading from exhaust manifold?), has broken outlet stub.
Doubt if it Affect starting. Will get replacement, though have made temp repair with glue.

Fairly confident now, like I was when I did my BX ten years ago!
Will report success, (or perhaps broken cam, but doubt that).
Thanks to all for your kind encouragement.
I feel a bit foolish.
But your assistance with the visual crank line up and general confirmations have been indispensable.

i had forgotten and did not realise you were trying to peg the third out of line bolt hole behind the pump sprocket,
now its as clear as mud i hope your key turning ceremony goes well tomororw,

the problems you have had over this belt cheange point out why it is necessary to time it up and peg it all off before removing the old belt

Electrical or pneumatic? The pneumatic one is off the intake pipe and is pressure sensing for the boost compensator. Dunno about any electrical ones - there is a link off No3 injector, but don't know where it goes (I only ever had a manual pumped TD).

That's the one I believe

The citroen parts random number generator has been at work again:

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT
00001574C4 RUBBER HOSE 40.12 GBP 48.14 GBP

:-D

It's only a bit of rubber hose - a bit of fuel hose of the right size will be more than adequate (at about 5% of the cost!!).

Cheers Richard. We've not got the right part then.
This one is a bolt on plastic unit (bolted with allen bolts to the cam cover just to the right - driver side of centre) with narrow hoses attached, one going down to the manifold somewhere, and one to the top of the fuel pump; additionally there is an unused pipe stub sticking out, and an electrical harness connection.

Local Citroen spares reckon it's a EGR emissions electrovalve (cost £26). :)

#its the Vaccum valve for the Pump Advance when the car is cold. It runs off a Vaccum controled by an Electro valve, rather then the Wax Stat that was perfectly good enough for years.

John, if the car starts perfectly and runs nicely, I wouldn't worry about it for now at all...

Cheers Guys,
@malcom: She is: Year 2000 Vehicle ID No. (VIN) VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] Xantia II Estate, engine code XUD9TE (or is it XUD9TF?) 1905cc TD LX,

@citroenxm That makes sense; one air pipe goes to an air intake ducting. Definitely idles a little weakly when cold, and possibly just a little hesitant on start.

However since restarting after timing belt change, and this valve breakage, she seems to lack boost, when kicking down on accelerator, although the engine runs a lot smoother now that its not a tooth out on the belt.

Perhaps I just need to open her more on the motorway, clean her out a bit.

BTW: Just read about the dirty damage EGR does to the inlet manifold and valves; :x I used to keep my engines clean inside, but its not so easy on these for access #-o ; I think it would be a good idea, for long term ownership, :?: to have stripped down head, cleaned it up and blanked off the EGR

Hi all, have just replaced cam belt and when torqueing up crankshaft pulley bolt according to Haynes found it to not be very tight, that is 40Nm and a further 50degrees. In fact I did it to 90 and the bolt still isn't really tight. Experience suggests that a bolt of this dia should be damn tight! After a prolonged search I came across this thread and citroenut suggests "all your weight" . Sounds right to me. Please may I have conformation that this is correct for a late 2000 hdi. I really do not want an expensive mistake through it not being tight enough - or too tight' and I do not want to do it again!!

Oh dear, cock up all round!!! Looks like right topic, and citroenxm should have been mentioned. Sorry! I take it "very tight indeed" is the way to go?
