I had a brand new VW Tiguan with the DSG gearbox for 3 weeks earlier in the year while my previous Freelander 2 insurance claim was being resolved , it was a nice thing but I much prefered the Landrover with the older autobox .

I need to hear as much tales of dsg gearboxes as I can so I can decide if it will be a good idea or a bad idea. I am leaning towards a bad idea at the moment, conzidering my budget would be a out a 9 to 11 plate probably with a higher than avdrage milrs so will be about that 100k mileage which is often when they start going wrong. Thats also at the mo ey where if it crapped itself and was going to be over a grand to sort it you would have to spend it and hope it can get going again, which is where I have been for months with bigpug. Whereas with the caddy van, less than a grand, 110000 miles and drives well if it craps itself big time punt it in spares and repairs and get another. If I see an 05, 06,07 c5 2.0hdi exclusive auto in good nick for less than a grand that could seriously tempt me for a car and get rid of bigpug. Im going to keep caddy and turn it into a mini one man camper. The vwtax in this area will keep it being worth money lol

You're not seriously telling me you'd take an older French auto over a VW DSG? Really. I've heard of some failures sure, but nothing like the amount of French ones of all types. My mate in Glasgow has been running DSG boxes in Passat and now a Tiguan for 10 years or more, 190k on it when he sold it. Faultless, like all the others in their fleet..

Im telling you that i havent got a effing clue what im doing. I've already got an older french auto that is knackered and the weather is too crap here for me to outside to it. My head state right now matches the weather, I have the dreaded Atos coming to me tomorrow to assess me for continuing PIP. At the moment this has turned me into a total wreck this has set of all my anxiety and panic attacks. I will not be making any decisions about anything untill this is sorted out.

My sympathies, Davie. I can't apply for PIP due to the sheer anguish it causes me.
I daren't even inform them I've recently been diagnosed with yet another chronic illness, due to the unwanted attention it may bring.

Thats exactly what the DWP want, folk not to apply so that cuts their benefits budget. Thet make it so intrusive and you have to re apply every two years and then it takes so long to get done its like you are permanently under scrutiny. Kt was may 8th that I sent the form in. And thats for PIP. I also have ESA to endure getting, thats every 2 years too. And of course not the same time. I will have to reapply for that next summer. Then if you are able to do a little job like I am, just, a disabled person is allowed to work up to 16 hours a week and earn up to £126 I think a week. But you have to declare this to the DWP and go for a review every 6 months for this! I do 12 hrs a week and have to declare exactly which hours I work. But then there is times, like a few weeks ago that I can hardly walk at all, and not go to work. That makes me unreliable to my boss, and although he is understanding he cannot keep running his busniess like that. Its comi g, sooner rather than later I think, that I shall have to stop work, with the loss of £100 + tips per week. To be honest I rather would not have the chronic conditions I have, would not be wholly reliant on benefits which i worked my ass off paying tax and NI for years for, and at 55 still being to work and provide for myself and others. I could rant about this for hours, and I'm in a ranting mood right now but I just need to STFU about it or I shall just make me worse

It's said that health & stress/anxiety issues affect men more because they have no one to talk to - & if they do, they won't. It seems to me that this forum (&, others as, in this respect, it is my no means unique) serve a useful purpose in society, as it provides a way for people to say how they feel without, perhaps, the embarrasment of face-to-face conversation - or perhaps it just a little easier knowing we allstart off with at least one thing in common. If it provides a crumb of comfort, long may it continue.

I have to wait 6 weeks to know the outcome of my PIP assessment. If I get the higher rate of mobility then I am going to swap that for a motability car. Im fed up of old tat and am not able to maintain then as they need. So its wait and see. I was in the hospital today for steriod injections into my hands. They have been next to useless for the past few weeks. These injections will help, but just for a couple of months. Im really fed up just now, I hate this time of year. I could happily sleep for the next 2 weeks till it is all done.

My Mum has problems with her hand in cold weather. Last Christmas I got her a couple of pairs of heated gloves (that heat the fingers as well). While these are not the same they might be of help;

Had never occurred to me that you hadn't got the higher mobility allowance given the problems you've got Davie...get that sorted out and it should be a massive weight off your mind.

Nothing to stop you having a car to tinker with at the weekends for fun as well, but having something you can just rely on day to day and toss at someone else to sort when it goes wrong can only be a good thing for you.

Took me and my mother a long time to convince my father to go for it, but he admitted quite quickly that it was the best thing he'd done in years. This was after us spending ten years literally digging around the back of the sofa to try to find enough pennies to buy a replacement for that tyre that's been down to the canvas for the last three months...you get the idea. Few things struck fear into our hearts than MOTs!

Took me until their third Motability car to get them to try a diesel and believe it had moved on since the 80s...

Pretty sure there's a big Peugeot dealer just outside Peterhead that do Motability stuff, quite convenient for you.

Look on the plus side, at least a Motability car these days isn't small, blue and mainly made of plastic...

...Still not quite sure to make of my decision to restore one of them.

 :-D 8-) Likewise...

More seriously, I don't know if it could work for you Davie but my decision to give up driving completely has been such an enormous weight off my mind it's just not true :D I really don't miss it and if I feel the need to play cars I still have my Saxo...

Maybe living on the edge of a big town and having loads of friends locally who are happy to transport me around for small acts of kindness in return helps... Baked goods are quite a good currency ;)

And likewise, I hope the assessment for the higher PIP comes through soon, goodness knows you deserve it. Fingers crossed....
