Funnily enough I've actually noticed the darker days far more since moving south...which makes absolutely no sense from a purely logical perspective!

I do remember confusing my other half no end when drawing their attention to the fact that it doesn't get fully dark up there at the height of summer...

It doesn't get fully dark around here at any time of the year... Street lights see to that!

When we first moved here in 2001, I suffered jet lag in the first couple of April / Septembers - the rate of change of daylight is 4.5 mins a day!

Santa has arrived with presents for bigpug. Hopefully she will respond to her pressies and awaken from her slumbers. Monday or the next dry day after that should be interesting.

(cap in hand) Please sir, what do you plan on doing with the originals?

Best of luck and hope the replacements work straight out of the box.

If the replacements work and get it going as far as I'm concerned the originals can be skipped/given away, if you want them a small donation to cover posting and they can find their way to you. Ive gone and been busy during daylight time sunday, monday and tuesday and then again on friday so hope the weather is cooperative on wednesday or thursday.

I was up to my daughters in Elgin yesterday, she who has the husband who is a scotrail mmechanic and a vw lover. He had a goog look o er my caddy van and pronou ced it a good one. He took off the wheels to check the brakes etc and promptly broke a wheelstud. That wheel had a brand new caliper disc and pads behind it, as has the other front one, and the back has new discs and pads also. He also reco s that the cambelt is not too old. So it looks li,e the van has been well cared for, not counting the fact that the carer forer was seriously heavy handed tightening the wheel studs. The new caliper and disc at least came off easily to get the remnants of the stud out of the hub. We then started a discussion anout car needs, both mine and his. My daughter finds their golf estate too big just doing the around town duties in Elgin, so after xmas he is going to get a little cheap to run car for her, and it is goi g to be a c1, 107 or aygo 5 door for about £1000. Should be easy for him to find. Then discussed what would do me. Once pigpug is going I will run it for a while but probably sell it in the spring. I think because I liked the dead leon so much it is possible that it will be another leon. But I want an auto and that means vw dsg box. I would expect it to be better than the sensodrive c2 box that I hate so much, but it is still if anything goes wro g with it then set fire to the car. I wouldbt like to pay for 2 clutches for it. I then thought c5x7. Cant be arsed with steering racks and if it were a 1.6hdi, turbos. Thats about the only two cars I fancy and at my price range its going to be a out 10, 11 plate, 80 tp 100 thousand miles and asking for trouble. Heres hoping that bigpug gets sorted and then runs as she should with no issues and the trust in her comes back and I do t need to go car shopping. Its not that I do a lot of miles now that I use the shops combo van for work, even though it is a horrid thing. The caddy van is like a rolls royce compared to it!

I thought VWs had 5 wheel studs, one spare in case it breaks!
I have to say the DSG b ox would put me off of a VAG auto, what does son in law reckon about them?
Fingers still crossed that Big Pug gets sorted with the "new" ECU!

The caddy does indeed have 5 studs, that seems like 2 spare in case they break a la old citroens   Son in law recons he would have a dsg box, apparently on the vw forums they are well thought of and dont go wro g often, but when thet do go wrong be prepared forlarger than large repair bills. They are apparently quite common in octavia taxis clocking up mega miles and if they were bad news then taxi owners would not use them. S I L recons change the gearbox oil every 50000 miles and they will be fine.

I would thing the only similarities between a dsg box and the hateful sensodrive box is that thet are a gearbox. I need to find a dsg I can test drive, although I do have a mate with an octavia dsg that he loves and says the best car he has ever owned, so he could be asked if I can take it for a run. He says its over 60mpg regularly.

DSG box is second only to the bloody iShift nonsense in some modern Volvo coaches in the degree of hate I developed for them.

Driving on the open road they do fine, but at low speed, especially trying to park on an uneven car park it was like trying to thread a needle wearing boxing gloves. There seemed to be no option between "roll backwards" and "propel myself through the wall at 20mph" in the last one I drove. It also always felt that despite having a choice of seven gears it was never in the correct one for the situation in question.

I also used to know a gent before moving down here who used to rebuild and repair gearboxes for a living. His opinion of DSG boxes was that they were great for him from a business perspective, but for his personal transport he'd not touch one with a barge pole. The suggestion seemed to be that they either go on for hundreds of thousands of miles without a glitch or are complete problem children for their entire lives, and it seems to be a roll of the dice that determines which you get.

Definitely test drive one before you buy. I've driven a few now and they never feel anything like a conventional auto box to me.

I wouldnt buy a dsg without driving it. Thats driving the one I buy, not a similar one so that rules out any seriously long distance buying sight unseen as I have been known to do on lots of occasions. So even if I were to drive mates octavia and like it, it could be a good one then I go buy a different one and it be a dog that it as rough as a badgers arse. Anyway I cant see it bei g for a few months yet
