I know that it is at the bottom of its depreciation curve just now, I have seen some decent looking examples advertised in the 1000 to 1500 bracket, and high mileage dogs at 6 to 700. I may see if I can get a remapper to get my own ecu sent to them to be mapped, that may solve my problem, or I see a siemens ecu, bsi and key fobs from an identical car on the bay for £100. That must be worth trying for me, and if that sorts it then I can get it mapped again by a reputable firm, or just leave it as it is if it gets going.

Hi Davie

The re-map back to standard might be a better bet, because you'll only have one outfit to deal with if things don't work. Buying a trio of parts secondhand (presumably un-fitted by the seller) could leave you with no-one to hold to account.

Explain that the unit was previously re-mapped and immediately failed, and the company has now disappeared

If your unit is reprogrammed, it is reasonable to expect the car to work, and obviously you won't be paying for it if it doesn't. So make sure the complete car is taken to the reprogrammer (or they come to it), and not send them the ECU to work on, because (a) they'll want paying before giving it to you, and (b) they won't have the task of delivering a working vehicle.

I seem to recall earlier in this thread that Davie had problems a while ago with it being impossible to communicate with the ECU, not sure if that could get in the way of re-re-mapping.

Also possible my memory has manufactured that idea.

Should be ok with the ECU off the car and plugged in directly.

When it was mapped it wouldnt work via the OBD port, and the ECU was taken out and opened up to be remapped. The leon has just been collected giving me good access to the pug so I hope to get it looked at now.

Theres a man in a van coming to look at bigpug. He does remaps as well as mechanical repairs. When I told him the story he thinks it could be one of two things. Its possible that the fuel pump objected to the remap and needs replacing, although he thinks this is unlikely. The more likely scenario is the ecu is fried. I know it was removed from the car and opened up to map it. This guy says when this is done it has to be properly resealed again or there is a chance that moisture gets in and ruins it. He believes this is what has happened to mine, and if it is then the course of action is replace the ecu, the bsi unit and the key fobs. This does sound entirely plausible to me, but I will wait to see what he finds out when (and indeed if) he appears.

Watching this with interest Davie... I think the second scenario is quite plausible...

Also, if it was opened then that infers some internal modifications may have been carried out, likely the swapping of a PROM chip... Very skilled soldering skills are needed to do that and you never know, all your grief may be just down to some poor soldering and a dry joint or two...

Fingers crossed...

Its certainly beyong me Jim. Give me a hammer and adjustable stilson and I could sort near anything on a boat, but there were little electromic stuf on the boats I worked on. I would expect you wuold nearly need a degree in electronics now to skipper or or repair a fishing boat now! Man in van not appeared today, and insurance company not been in touch about the Leon either. And then just to make things worse my health has taken a big nosedive. I hope its not long before it recovers. Its more important than two broken cars.

You remind me of a description of Dwarves, Davie. They normally have an anvil and a hammer (well, the blacksmith ones do). With that, and a decent fire, they can make better tools. With the better tools and a forge they can make anything.

The seat leon is written off. More damage than thought. Parts needed replaced or fixed, bonnet, front bumper, headlamp, foglight, wing, wheelarch liner, bottom wishbone, steering arm, possible steering rack, front door, rear door, sill, rear spring, rear shock. Thats quite a list, and too much for me to take on fixing it. It would end up sitting at the side of the house rusting away and never getting done. Its a shame as it was a good car, but the accident could have been a lot worse, hitting a big deer at 60mph is not really advisable.

That's a fair catalogue of damage Davie and a lot to try and repair... Write-off is the right decision...

I trust the insurance have been fair to you and you'll be able to buy a worthy replacement with the settlement...

I still say you were bloody lucky... I vaguely knew someone years ago who hit a deer in an Allegro... He did not survive...

When you hit yours they had other things on their minds - it was rutting season... In the Woburn Deer par they were going bonkers...

One of the reasons modern cars are so safe is that so many things are made to deform aside from a really strong bit in the middle.

A mate of mine hit a pigeon on the motorway in their company car (VW CC) - bill came to over five grand to fix it, basically everything forward of the front wheel had to be replaced - including the structure under the bumper, not just the plastic bits.

I would recommend (if you haven't already got one) fitting a dash cam. Mine cost me around £50 over 3 years ago, plus I had to buy a micro SD card, but it works very well, regardless of the lighting conditions. In my recent accident it can be clearly seen that I did stop behind the car in front, and a moment later I was shunted into said car. On the same footage (and on a full monitor) it can be seen that a car is performing an illegal U-Turn, and then passes us on the right a few moments later (and it appears to be an Audi).

Well you worry when the car is a recent purchase and you wonder how much the insurance is going to pay out. The guy asked what I had paid for it, I de lined to tell him until he told me his valuation. Im happy enough wuth the figure I am getting, after the excess is taken off Im getting 50 quid more than I paid for it. Thats the second time I have had a bigger payout from privilege, who are direct line by another name so they are on comparison websites, than I expected. And their premiums are always competitive.
