Sounds like you've done the right thing Davie. There's only so much you can do, and you've got enough problems of your own to worry about.

Tough times Dave......hang in there mate.

Was he charged with taking the car without permission ?
If he was you can request the marker is removed as YOU as the owner had nothing to do with it.

Classic catch22, if you give permission they can charge you as well, be very careful with Plod as they like to get the numbers of charges up for their stats.

Plod actually told me to say I gave him permission but expressly told him to insure it for him. That’s what was said in court, I have no charges, he just got no insurance, 6 points and community service. Him and his mates got a street caution which is the end of it but if they get caught again with weed then they get hit hard. Now that I have calmed down I shall ask in the plod farm if I can get the marker off, as it was not me and son now has no access to my house or the car keys. I can only ask, I don’t want to be randomly stopped and searched by them.

In other news I have agreed the sale of one of my cars. I need to thin down a bit as I currently own 5! However it is one which I decided was a keeper, whitebug. I’ve owned her 6 months, done 6000 miles at 61mpg and not spent a penny apart from fuel. However in the case of being offered £400 more than I paid then that’s the way to do it. I will use the skoda fabia for now, I’m actually more comfy in it than whitebug. I will also have an a4 to sell. The money from whitebug might let me get bigpug going again.

Well my days with a french car daily seem to be finished. The 205 is safe for just now, bigpug is still here, still broken but going to be advertised as spares or repairs and I will just take the hit on the near total loss of money, Gabby is virtually worthless so the intention is still finish painting her then she is not fat from an MOT. The way fuel prices are going I think she will be returned to work hack mode running a high proportion veg/derv mix. The £100 fabia which then cost 300 to mot has been used lately but now has moved on , slightly more than money back. So I was in need of a reliable daily, cheap to run and much more comfortable than the 107 was. Considering in the past I owned a seat leon 1.9tdi and liked it even though it was a heap, and I liked the cheapo fabia, my daughter recently bought a 15 plate leon 1.6 tdi, which I like, I went looking for a reasonably priced fabia or leon. I could have gone for a brand new motability car but decided I would rather own my own and keep the money. So what have I found? A 2011 seat leon 1.6 cr tdi. It is unmarked, fsh, £20 road tax, should get good mileage, at a reasonable price. Its quite a basic thing, but it will do me. VAG cars usually sell for a fortune in tnis area, espically white ones which this is so hopefully it will be good to me.

Well the 107 made me a quid for 7 months, 6500 miles and only put petrol in and an MOT, nowt needed. The bargains are ousted by the 407 though. Cost me near 2&1/2 grand and I cant even get a local scrappy to take it for nothing! You win some, you lose some. I was close to buying a c4vts hdi for a daily, but it was miles away and I couldnt be bothered with the distance. It was black with a pano roof too!
This Leon was owned by the girlfriend of a volkswagen technician in Inverness. The guy has a leon fr 170 tdi, so it has been looked after. It has, and some on here dont like this, the dpf removed and replaced with an empty dpf shell, the egr valve is blanked and it is remapped to 147bhp rather than 110. This was all done in the inverness vw dealers using the vw diagnostics. The guy also said it went from doing 600 miles to a tank of derv to nearer 750. So hopefully no issues come mot time, as it has already been through a mot under the new rules since then, and no future dpf or egr problems which are the usual diesel problems. It is home and it certainly does pull like a train. The only thing is its not far from needing two new tyres on the front, but its shod with vredstien tyres which are one of my favourite brands, and the benefit of the standard 16" wheels is vredstien tyres 41 quid each from camskill, cheapo budget are 31 so for a tenner each it will get decent ones again.

It’s not so much that some don’t ‘like’ the DPF / EGR removal Davie, it’s just illegal now for public road using vehicles and will invalidate any car insurance as the emissions equipment has been removed and therefore no longer type approved. It may have passed the MOT test but an MOT doesn’t make a car road legal.

The MOT can only ever be a general guide to road worthiness as far as visual checks, equipment testing and limited prodding allow, but still doesn’t mean it is road legal of course.

I think insurers won’t even cover cars who have had emissions kit removed since 2014 - just try getting a quote when you mention it  . At the end of the day though, many criticise uninsured drivers on the road, yet turn the other cheek when it comes to this sort of thing, yet the end result is the same, no insurance.

As a general rule, car insurance companies require your car to be 'roadworthy'. The nearest you can get to a definition of a roadworthy car is one that conforms to both Construction and Use Regulations and Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations. Whilst it's technically accurate to say that having a defeated DPF means that your car doesn't comply with C&U regs - ergo it's insurance is invalidated, it's equally correct to say that having a broken tail lamp means it doesn't meet RVL Regs and therefore has invaild insurance - whether you're involved in an accident or not.
There's an awful lot of things on a car that could technically invalidate an insurance policy, some of them major parts, some minor - a defeated DPF is but one bit that's hidden away from view.

Peter - The XM is listed on the Club-XM site as belonging to ststech1973, in Crewkerne.

Yes, Davie, tell us about the 407... It shouldn't go to waste.
