That's a couple of little jobs done on whitebug. She arrived with a broken headlamp mounting, probably as a result of its prang two years ago which has passed two mot's but the headlight was slack and vibrated so now has a strengthening bit bolted and superglued in place so the light is now steady. Cost nil. The hazards did not work, got the switch out, sprayed contact cleaner in it, now does work. Cost nil. She is due it's MOT in a few weeks so just getting it ready. Can't see anything else to bother it. Kerri's A4 due it's MOT the same day so it's next in line for a check. I'm supposed to be going to the auction tonight, I have a mate looking for a small van aka Berlingo size or an estate car would suffice but he is VAT registered so he is thinking van. I can't be bothered though, I really was not well yesterday and although a bit better today don't want to push myself for someone else and ending up on the scrapper tomorrow again myself.

Good policy Dave and may your recovery be speedy... Always best to rest and take it easy until all is back where it should be again... I learned that the hard way...

The best jobs are the successful ones that cost nothing, very satisfying!

Also it's dangerous for you to go to any car auction for any reason.

Car auctions and me are dangerous. I did not go tonight! I will only go when he comes with me, I'm not buying a motor for someone else again. Done that before and I ended up with it and having to sell it on.

Whitebug got a clean bill of health at the MOT station today. No faults :-D Graham said its very clean underneath and there is absolutely no signs of accident damage apart from the slightly iffy paint job, which to be fair is actually ok, its just some of the masking leaves a bit to be desired.

Kerri's A4 was not so good. It needs two brake flexi hoses, two control arms in the front suspension and one brake caliper either freed off or replaced. Its not really that much on a 14 year old car that has done 152000 miles. It should be done and tested before the weekend.

Got the bits for the audi so thats on the job list for tomorrow. I hope it doesnt fight me. Getting the suspension bolts out after 14 years could be fun, NOT!

didn't spot that one Davie to get that precision, credit has to be given. Is there a bit of a tale of the when and where of it :?: :-D (at precisely 39373 0r maybe 39372 you would have had to reset the trip meter to get that perfection!

Excellent! There is a thread on significant milage photos on the OTCL

It was total chance Neil. The trip has never been reset since Ive owned the car over 6000 miles ago, as the reset doesnt work. And its total chance it happened at a wide open farmyard where I could get off the road to photograph it

Still reckon the 205's instrument panel is right up there in my top 10 for most pleasing overall design.

I need to actually sit down and make that list sometime...

Audi A4 must rank as the worst thing I have ever worked on. Every nut and every bolt is fighting us. Changed the flexi pipes on the back, they were not too bad. Then moved on to the front. Getting the caliper off not too bad, then the fun began. It ended up with me heading to a scrappy for another caliper as the bleed nipple sheared off. Why does audi totally over engineer the front suspension? There are 4 individual links, all made of aluminium held together with steel bolts. Anyone who has worked on c5 or xantia back brakes knows the problem. Every bolt and nut stuck fast in the aluminium. Eventually got one of the bottom arms changed on the left side. Time to move onto an upper arm on the drivers side. Simple enough you would think, a bush at one end held in with one nut and bolt. One balljoint at the other held in with one nut and bolt. Well it is impossible to remove in situ, as audi must have built the strut and links and hub assembly then bolted it on to the cat. Big problem here, cannot get the bolt out as it is in the wrong way round, can get the nut off but the bolt hits the inside ot the turret with it about 1/2 way out. Not enough room to get the grinder up to cut the bolt or even get a hacksaw blade up to cut it. The other end, both ball joints held in with one bolt which is resisting all sorts of torture to get it out. The only way we can see to get it done is take the whole suspension out in one bit. Then lies the next problem, there is so much stuff to strip out of the engine bay to get to the top of the strut. Its all your worst nightmares come together.

I've only done brief battle with this generation of Audi Davie, and we wound up removing the whole strut as one unit for exactly the sort of reasons you're discovering.

I hated that car with a passion and it wasn't even mine!
