A very dirty 107 on the MOT bay a couple hours ago. The only thing needed was a quick weld of the rearmost hanging bracket on the exhaust a few days ago and it's a pass at 75500 miles and no advisories. Graham, the MOT man likes these in his words they are hardy ba5tard5 of things! It is really burning oil though, i put a litre in today, it was under the min mark on the dipstick from there it takes a full litre to put it just below max. That's for two weeks, about 1000 miles I would think. It's none dry underneath, oil and coolant both spotless so the only place it can be going is out of the exhaust, yet I see no evidence of this. Is 1 litre per 1000 miles oil consumption acceptable? I think not really. I'll wait untill I is home to see what he thinks about it. He has ashot of my car today as his civic has a burst exhaust, don't worry, it's the Leon, not the activa lol

That's about what our old 1.8 CVH engined Sierra was burning when one of the oil control rings let go - and that was trailing a smoke screen that 007 would have been proud of! Really surprised with that oil consumption that you're not seeing some evidence of it.

Does show what a difference driving style makes though - mine is in the mid 60K mark from memory, and she's never used a drop of oil between services.
Current fleet:
07 Volvo V70 SE D5, 88 Renault 25 Monaco, 85 Sinclair C5, 84 Trabant 601S, 75 Rover 3500, 73 AC Model 70.

She's never used a drop until recently. No signs of smoke and emissions spot on today. It's a mystery to me. Shaun home now and he is unconcerned by its oil consumption. He says his work gone through so much oil that they won't miss a litre a fortnight going into a 107 rather than gallons of the stuff going into a lot of quarry machinery, 30 odd lorries, countless company cars and vans. I suppose he has one advantage of working in his companies head quarry where all lorries cars and vans are serviced as well as the machinery which is too big to move around different sites. And they use quality stuff as they need reliability from their machines.

And he broke the Leon!!!!!!! One bloody Day! Not a major break but a break nevertheless. Drivers side wiper stuck at 45° then the other one hit it and got stuck. Ggggggrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi Davie,

Not sure what oil you're running on, but try some good old 20W-50. It can cut oil consumption dramatically, where it is being burned rather than leaked. It's also decidedly affordable!

It's always been 5W30 since we have had it. I said to Graham at the mot today and he said that's what they should have, but these engines are not fussy what oil they use so a thicker oil should be tried. Shaun will just run it until the oil light comes on then top it up. He has no mechanical sympathy at all. He won't check it weekly when that is what this car needs. It's almost as if he doesn't care if it siezes in the near future, just get another engine and chuck it in. He has too much money to waste.

I'm just out of bed and looked out of the window and thought out of 6 cars owned in this household Shaun has the o ly one that is not broken in some way. Ok the 107 is burning oil but that's not broken yet! Sitting out there is the 107, the Leon and his civic. The Leon has btoken wipers, they tied themselves in knots with him yesterday. The civic has a burst exhaust. The xantia still has a fan that has a minimum d of its own so it is disconnected, his Skoda is apparently sorted but still SORN with no MOT, and his 205 gti is abandoned, the guy welding it cut the sills of it within 2 days of getting it and never touched it since
