8 valve normally aspirated 900 here...With an auto box - and in a city which consists mainly of 70mph dual carriageway roads with a roundabout every 0.9 miles... Recipe for horrendous fuel economy and a perpetually worn nearside front tyre.
Current fleet:
07 Volvo V70 SE D5, 88 Renault 25 Monaco, 85 Sinclair C5, 84 Trabant 601S, 75 Rover 3500, 73 AC Model 70.

That sounds about the worst possible conditions for fuel efficient useage Zel. Accelerate to 70, sit there for 20 seconds, brake to a halt, round a roundabout and repeat! I wouldn't be counting mpg either!

Mind you, with a Xantia Activa why would you brake? Surely you can whip around them roundabouts at a nice speed?

Our 107 is starting to feel it's mileage. It's now about 75000, which maybe is not a lot really but it's higher than average as it's coming up till its 5th birthday. Mind you it is still totally original apart from oil, filters, tyres and front discs and pads and a wiper blade! That is total reliability. The miles have all been hard miles though, Shaun drives it flat out to his work and back, 42 miles each way, and when I was using it for deliveries it was total abuse it got, all in gear stop start stuff. That's twice now since its last oil change 5000 miles ago that the oil light has come on. I'm rarely driving it just now. When the oil light comes on it needs a litre of oil time fill it, that's about 1/3 of its total capacity. So it is burning oil. Oh well not my problem. I expect Shaun will manage to blow up the engine, his mechanical sympathy is nil. He does not get my cars! He has driven the xantia but I was sitting beside him going to my daughters in Elgin. The 107 is due an Mot very soon, it's exhaust is hanging off, needs welded and it will hold a while. I have been asked to take it for its mother, which I will do, but he has to fix the exhaust first. I'm not really caring if it has a mot or not, I have two cars to pick from before I have to resort to it. And I'm not delivering fast food just now as the health is a bit worse, so it won't mean that I will resort to the activa for fast food.

There's no news on the activa, it is still down at my daughters, it has not moved for a week, so it will get a run very soon. No news on the Spaniard either, it is just doing what it is told without any worry and on a minimal amount of diesel. I actually am getting to really like that car. It's just as well I have the activa to keep me here [emoji12] [emoji23] [emoji23]

Interesting the 107 is starting to show wear and oil consumption Davie.... I'll be watching with interest as to how this car goes through its MOT and how the next few thousand miles pans out...

Yep, 75000 is up on miles for its age, but is not high in the grand scheme of things. It has been serviced at every 10000 miles + or- 500 or so from when we bought it, and had been serviced by the supplying dealer at 8000, 17000 and 22000 when we bought it at 2&1/2 yes old. It has been hard driven since 22000! It also doesn't feel to have quite the pick up it used to have. The one good thing is its not had a clutch, and they are renowned for having weak clutches! It may well keep running for a long time yet just needing topping up. At the end of the day I am rarely using it now, so if Shaun blows up the engine, and it will be his 4th engine failure on 4 cars in 3 years, he will have to re-engine it. That shouldn't actually be a major job on these! He says it's not his fault that engines blow, but he is the only common denominator [emoji12] [emoji23] [emoji23]

Davie, what oil have you been using in it? Proper oil is 5w/30 but it might be worth trying a drop of 10W/40 in it and see if that cuts down its thirst a bit...

It's always had 5/30 full synthetic, but he's away to change it, it gets rice a year at MOT time, that's now and in November regardless of distance. I'll tell him to go for 10/40. If you look in the handbook it gives the largest range of oil I have ever seen. Brown and slippery [emoji23] [emoji23]

I say 10W/40 Davie as that's what Sian's Pixo uses and the two engines are very similar...

I went down to Kerri's today to swap the Leon for the activa. My house is still covered in scaffolding, the planned work has not been started yet. It could be weeks before we are back to normal. As usual the activa started first time after more than a week. It had a puncture on the front drivers side. I knew it had a slow. Blew it up and took it up the road so thought I'd give it a good check. All wheels removed and brakes examined, no problems. The back brakes are a little pitted but still straight and I slackened the bolts and tightened them again. I may change the discs and pads this summer, but there's still about 4 mm left on the pads so I may not! Due to the puncture and the other front tyre being down to about 3mm I put on the wolfrace wheels. They have 4 cracking tyres on them so they will get used. So the 17" resolfens have two tyres really needing replaced and two good tyres. The 15" activa wheels have two OK tyres and two older pirellis which are horrid and I'm not running them! You guys don't like the wolfrace but needs must. I suppose I could go to the tyre shop and swap the tyres over, but that costs money lol. The wolfrace will stay on while I save up for two new tyres for the resolfens.
