The left rear door shut was just the outer skin which needed work. A little bit cut out and a patch made and but welded in. With a little filler and paint and no one will know it was touched. He had the inner part of the sill on the other side done, just the outer part to do and it's done. It will get the silver hammerite for now until it gets painted properly. I have Shauns civic up for MOT on Thursday, hopefully the activa is ready to get booked in whilst in there. I've had a poke about and can't see anything obvious under it for mot man to find, but as usual that's no guarantee all is well. The civic should pass, it had quite a fail list, Shaun says it is all done, the only thing I did for him was get two tyres fitted. He has done the rest without my help, which is as it should be.

I just got a phone call letting me know the activa is ready to be picked up. The patches have a covering of red oxide primer as agreed and I will be left to do any filling and painting as necessary. I need to get a couple cans of waxoyl with the long tubes to spray the inside of the box sections of the sills, there is grommets on the sills to allow this I think. The weather has broken here, it's cold and misty so I hope I get a chance to paint properly in the next few days or it will just get the silver hammerite brushed on for the winter.

Good news Davie.

Please do NOT use waxoil, it is to thick and solidifies to quickly inside sections like that....DINATROL (or such like) is a better bet for those areas.

Good coats of standard car primer/paint is better than Hamerite as well mate. (even if you need to take it off later.)

Thanks Alasdair, I shall look for Dinatrol then for in there. Would waxoil be the best for outside? I'll need to do a bit of the sill before doing the silver on it, and there will be bits on the inner side of the sills/floorpan.

Great news all is ready Davie :D

Get that primer covered as soon as possible as it's porous and will let the wet in and start corrosion all over again...

It's a beautiful calm day here, perfect for painting outside. Problem is I've had medical appointments this morning, and away to the MOT man shortly with a civic so not had time to go collect the activa. It shall be picked up tomorrow. I have ordered dinatrol with a long hose to spray inside the sills, and stone chip for the bits that need it. The red oxide will be covered up very quickly, just don't know how well yet, with hammerite which I have in the shed, or getting done properly now which involves spending money I don't have right now! I suspect it will be hammerite for now, even though I will have to rub it all off again to do it properly at a later date.

There won't be any rust getting a start over the winter. I'm not too bothered about getting it looking perfect just now. The car has to live outside and gets used when I want to use it so the aesthetics of it is not the most important thing just now. As long as it is not unsightly for now. It has its appointment with Mr MOT on Monday at 1pm.

That will be after I do a retest of the civic. Shaun assured me that the brakes were all stripped down and freed off. Perfect for the footbrake, it's a pity he forgot to free off the handbrake levers on both back wheels! So I have a brake day tomorrow, kerris recently bought Audi needs discs and pads, she wants to learn stuff so I am going to be an instructor. I hope Audi rear brakes are not difficult!

Once there two bits are painted silver the patches will be as if they had never been done. Just maybe the shinnest sliver of filler needed on the door shut. To my eyes he has done am amazing job of fabricating the patch panel in there. £350 spent, but not one bit of rust on the car now.

Davie ... was that door shut fabricated and patched in cos if it was I cant tell. How'd he get that curve on it? I have three cars now showing rust and have been checking out full sill replacement costs. Not too bad to buy but guess it's the welding that will take any dosh should i go down that path. I'm assuming all xantia sills are the same??

The rust was cur out in the door shut and he fabricated a panel to weld in. He took 3 goes at cutting and shaping the patch before welding it in. I think once it's painted the repair will be invisible. Also the bit on the sill, it was worse than the door shut. The whole lot was cut out, sill, jacking point, inner sill and into the floorpan. The underside is all stone chipped, it only needs a blast of silver on the sill and again it will be as if it has never been touched. The welder thought it looked as if the jacking point had been damaged at some point in the past. He has made a phenominal job, theres no filler been used, thats his patching and a quick blast of red oxide primer. I am very impressed.

With reference to the damaged jacking point, it is not uncommon for garages to use trolley jacks at the places (and bend the metalwork).
