Each to their own I guess but personally I would change the belt. For the cost and time involved, to me it's just not taking the risk. If it was to break it would ruin the originality of the car, cost much more money and time than changing it and probably cause a breakdown at an inconvenient time.

Oh, I don't know myself. I guess if the coolant's been sat in there for so long without a change too, the head gasket could be likely to fail at some point, as I believe they don't like old coolant. Might was well run it until the belt breaks, then he can do the whole lot at once :-) If it doesn't break, bargain, do it at the recommended interval.

I ran a Mondeo 1.8 to 144k on it's original belt from buying it with 8000 on the clock. My ex-wife ran it for two more years without a belt change, it was 13 years old then.

Agreed.

I guess if the car is just a cheap run around that your not too bothered about, then you could leave changing the cam belt. You might get another 50k miles out of it, but then again you might only get 5k out of it before it breaks.

On the other hand if you like the car and want to keep it for a while then a timing belt change is worth it.

well now up to 11,000 miles, nothing much to report. The fuel economy has improved, I was disappointed with it at first as my BX was better. This is an estate and heavier though so only to be expected I suppose. Recently probably due to the warmer weather and traffic moving faster it has now gone up to 47/48 mpg :)

Still need to do the cam belt, will do a full service on it at 12,000 miles. I found some oil filters that will come in handy for my CX too.

Excellent news Neil and that's a bloody excellent deal on filters... Wish I could find a deal like that for V6 filters...

Well, according to this website they might just fit on a V6;

http://www.niparts.com/OEM/DCBF9D/CITROEN/1109N3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

so they might just be worth a punt at that price. That many would last me over a decade!

I bought my last 10 from my local Citroen dealership, 2.50 each. With them in front of me at that price there's no excuse not to change them. :)

it could be worth a couple of you getting 10 and splitting them at a rally / meeting ETC.

Physically they do James but the pukka V6 one looks more like an oil drum than an oil filter. It's about twice as big as the little pipsqueak fitted to the XU/TU engines...

I guess there's a good reason for the V6 one being so much larger and even though the XU one will fit I personally won't use them on a V6...

Im pretty sure I saw you a couple of weeks back Neil, driving down cottingham road past the university.

Thanks! I just ordered them! I remember before tinterweb days getting a similar deal from Neat Autos - used to advertise in Car Mechanics mag I think. Anyone else use them? I bought a job lot of N1109's - ended up selling the unused ones on e-bay for small change when I drove around in Mercs and Porsches for a while :-D

I get through an oil filter every 4 months so makes sense for me!!!! Oil from Aldi/Lidl or Comma from the factors every 4 -5k miles
