These are the figures I got from my 2.0. Hdi 406 estate returning from Scotland last year, I know the readout is near enough correct because I can get 1,000 + from a tankful. The weight is not much different from the C5.

Looks suspect, lol.

All the facts and figures below for Peugeot 406 Estate (96-04) 2.0 HDi L (90bhp) 5d are from the official Peugeot manufacturer data and are regularly updated to ensure they are as accurate as possible.

I would agree, but that is with 'normal' driving, I don't drive normally. I could always get 50 mpg + from my 2.1 td XMs which is way above the guide figures but I drive very gently rarely over 60 mph or 2000 rpm.

Anyone who believes that VAG build a quality car are from my experience living in a dream world, my mothers TDi Golf, DMF failed @ 1,500 miles, at work they tried using Golf VR6's and Transporters vans but both were so unreliable that they had to get rid of them 20k miles earlier than they normally did with Vauxhall's and Ford's. At present out of three 3.0 TDi A6 Quattros (10 reg) with under 50k miles, one's just required a new gearbox and another is having a new clutch fitted.

VAG quality :wtf:

Finding this thread interesting!

In my experience nothing vw has really compared to Citroens ive owned. While looking for the c5 I owned a while back I test drove all sorts including a couple of passats. Not impressed really, masses of road noise compared to c5 and Xantia and a dark miserable interior which although well screwed together had rock hard seats and no charm.

I owned a seat Alhambra 1.9tdi and found it rough, grumbly and very slow. My Xantia HDi is the same age and is light years ahead in every way really. Its much more refined with a nicer interior.

On the last two tanks brimmed I have achieved 58 mpg and 56mpg. Whilst these journeys are on good A roads at 50-60 I dsont hang about and its fully loaded twice a week floor to ceiling with trumpets and tubas.

Just my thoughts on the matter

jelly wrote:Hi after buying an 03 reg C5 HDI, had Citroen's before C3's but new ones and was happy with those, and being happy so far with my C5 having done about 4k miles but being a bit concerned by the comments even from a garage owner about the reliability. Company I worked for before ran a couple of Picasso's to high mileages 350k to 450k which was the other Citroen I considered have I made the right choice :?:

From the OP question regarding the C5, how has this thread arrived at a fuel consumption arguement.
I can't see where "jelly" is concerned about it, he is concerned about reliability. ALL manufacturers have reliability problems if you buy second hand cars, it's the nature of the beast. My son has a 535 Beemer, bought less than a year ago. It's a nice looking car, but it has had endless problems. He has spent hundreds of pounds keeping it on the road and still has no confidence in it. Cruise stopped working, door card fell off, steering wheel controls stopped working, clutch is making weird noises, broken front coil spring , heater stopped working. The MPG is not bad though!

Hi the main concern was the electronics, was after an Audi A4 before I got the C5 and might be after (another, or replacement) soon, and if, a big "if" I did get another car in makes sense in my mind to have the same car because an estate would be useful?

I think the early 8 valve Hdi,s are the most economical and reliable of any modern engine, like their predecessors they can be good for well over 300,000 miles, just take a look at some of the cars for sale on ebay.

Hard pushed to beat the 1.9 TiD from Saab (GM ) used with different tweaks in loads of cars. Very quick and very economical but hard suspension makes them no use for me.
Son got rid of an Audi recently because of fuel economy only. Then again, it was a V8 S4 Avant! Never had any reliability problems with it though.
