All depends what you want out of the car. I like big, roomy, comfortable, big boot, nice ride and all the extras (reversing sensors, darkening mirror etc etc etc) which make for A1 cruising on the er, well, A1 and other motorways and autoroutes. The car's often loaded to the gills with heavy stuff (ok people and wine) and you can't beat the pulling power of the 2.2. (before anyone asks, the fap /dpf nonesense comes off with an hours work). Mpg on long moderate-speed runs is low 40's to 50. Do lots of round town / short runs on a cold engine? - just buy the 2.0 or something smaller, simples. And yes, I'd buy another, to make a brace when current Mitsi expires.

What's that saying about making the same mistake twice ?

Having said that I'd probably risk it if the car was cheap enough.

I suspect we would all be guilty of that mate. I would probably have another S type Jag, even though I nearly had to sell my body to keep it on the road.

mpg is subject to a lot of conditions... driving style is one, when I got my car it was at around 13.1l/100km (just under 21mpg), currently my average is around 11.1l/100 (about 25.5mpg), and in summer time, I can average about 10.5l/100 (just under 27mpg)
So with me driving the car it is 20%-30% more efficient over its previous owner (of course I don't know when it was reset beforehand, but I'm guessing it wasn't done all that recently up to when I got it)

Quoted MPG for the 2.0HDI is 50mpg, Quoted MPG for the Golf 1.9 TDI is 53mpg, so he couldn't have been driving very economically!

i worked for vw , they are not as good as the advertisers would have you belive , give me a Citroen over a vw any day

You in a dream world, lol. Vw, sets the standards, facts, not opinions, old citroens very good mpg, newer ones, power you dont need, crap mpg.

Quoted for mine is 27mpg, and look under normal conditions, mine is pretty much spot on! For my 03 Primera, quoted was 46mpg... I only ever got it above 40mpg in France doing long motorway drives. There's probably quite a few people here who achieve or exceed the quoted mpg of their PSA engine :)

Why is this guy insisting on comparing a VW Golf TDI at 1241 KG weight, with a C5 at 1608 KG weight?
Are you seriously trying to compare a car which is 375 KG heavier, and expecting the comparison to mean anything? Have you got the hang of this comparing cars thing?

A friend of mine recently bragged that he managed to get 163MPG out of his 52 reg Golf GTi. I asked him how he was able to know this. He told me that he had filled the Golf up, and then set off on a 163 mile journey. Later, when he had got there, he filled it up again. He found that it only took 1 gallon of petrol. I then asked him how he had achieved this remarkable feat of economy. He wouldn't tell me at first, but when his girlfriend started sniggering, and told him that if he didn't, she would, he explained all.

After filling up the car, they set out. After about 30 miles the Golf stalled, and wouldn't start again. The AA guy found the injector pump had failed, and arranged for them to be recovered to their destination, 133 miles away.
