Re: The answer to the rusty Xantia Jamb...

Post by andy5 »

To confirm, is this about the series 1 and 2, or just 1 only, or mainly with a sunroof, or is it hard to tell and could it be variation in production most of the way through?

I am assuming that the foam can have voids that trap or bridge water like cavity wall insulation sometimes does, but there are some posts suggesting the foam is not always present.

My car is probably ok, but I must admit I have not sat there and stared at it, and as one arch liner is missing at the moment maybe I should start to worry.

Andy..

ALL models! Only early models as in L, M and N had the foam from what Ive seen, as later P reg and W reg cars Ive cut the arch out of were empty with nothing in them...

I originally thought non sunroof cars, which I still beleve, but looking at the evidance of the last M reg car its the small square hole that lets the water in and it travels forwards...

Thanks for the reply. I'm using my mobile at the moment, but when I get a better look at the photos and my knee stops hurting I'll sit by the car and take a look.

But before that can I ask does the arch liner help cover the hole you mention? I'd better get a replacement. The last one was dislodged in an attack by a 3 wheel Audi, and I haven't changed the towbar cross member yet either.

Supposed to, but thats the issue, the water gets behind it and then runs down and works it way across... The liner sits tight against the arch lip, but its NOT enough!

Blimey, Taffy, your car REALLY has been in the wars.. Rusty Xantia cills are very rare, though my V6 Xantia is rather bad.

Ive yet to weld xantia cills.. My guess is they will be NFP, and patching would be needed.... :?

Sills still appear to be available from Citroen - at a slightly amusing £260 a side [-X Can't see aftermarket ones, so guess you'd need to chop some out of a scrapper, or fab your own patches.

To add to this, it's only just dawned on me how big a gap there is that causes this failure, here's a clip showing you where to look!

http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Dommmo ... 5.mp4.html

We were part way re-sealing the bung that is missing in this photo, they are often loose and let crap into the sills, in both our Xantias we realised there was crap in there, water amongst some muck and grime, hardly ideal! So what we did was get some keep-rust-at-bay fluid (we use owatrol) and pour it into that hole, then get an air line which blasts the owatrol all over the inner surfaces, repeat until it looks well coated. Then we siliconed a new bung in place if the seal didn't seem too great.

Nice detective work Paul! As Sherlock Holmes said, "You saw, but did you observe?"

I had about same problem. I cleaned the rust with sand paper and steel brush and I treated the sheet with some solution for rust and with primer. A collegue cut from other Xantia same sheet metal in good condition. After I fixed the new sheet with rivets I used some lute, spray paint, etc... but you'll see better in photos maybe is helpful for someone. It came out pretty good considering is behind the door.
