Million mile BMW E30 :)
That's really a bit of a cheat though Duke, rolling road use at a fixed 45mph with occasional bursts to 80mph isn't going to bear any resemblance to a taxi man or a private motorist hammering a car under all road and load conditions.

The BP trial I quoted earlier which was done on actual roads and supervised by the RAC was much more true to life.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Was reffering to old fashioned British Leyland stuff where 60k was needing a rebuild.. :-D

In reality, petrol engines are much better these days then of old due to better oil quailty..

The 2.oi 8v PSA engine was a cast block and much stronger... The smaller engines 1.6 and 1.8's were wet liner engines.. Im not sure if they are as strong as cast block engines..

The Mini has had two family of engines fitted in them actually. The first generation from 2001 used whats known as the Tritec Engine, of single Cam 16v Cam chain OHC engine... This is a Chrysler/Rover venture..this was then replaced by the PSA/BMW Prince engine, as said above, used from 2005 in the Mini, and 2011 in the Bmw 1 series...

From 2012 Saab - seeing as they have been mentioned a lot here, are ALSO going to be useing the Prince engine in the new 9-3

So, here comes a Universal Mechanic, who eventually will only need to know aout one make of engine.. :-D :-D

Yeah. Electric.

And everyone who's conveniently forgotten about what BMW, Audi, VW and Mercedes did during '39-45 will find ways to link the electric motor to Germany and praise it...

I raise you a 306 HDi that had 272k on it when i sold it last week.

Only 1 clutch in its life as far as I could tell and regular oil changes. Fastest 90bhp HDi I've driven as well! specially compared to the slug in my dads C5 but im sure it had been chipped and lowered but boy was it good motoring for £400 :)

And it ran sweet on BioD :) I replaced its original battery as well when i got it as it was getting on a bit for the cold mornings we started getting.

A bit off topic (but this is the FCF!) however I learnt something new and interesting the other day... Citroen in their usual fashion of leading the way had the first ever diesel production car which was the Citroen Rosalie, available in the Familiale in 1933...

Merc wasn't until 1936...

Oh, back on topic a little longer - I know, and have seen with my own eyes a Mark 1 BX 19RD with 309,000 Miles! =D>

Million Mile Honda Accord

Remembered reading this a while back, so dug out the link.

He got a brand new Accord for his efforts, do you reckon Citroen would do the same?

Just had an email from my eldest son, who just got back from Madrid.
Said one of the conference attendees showed up in her slightly shabby 300,000 mile C5 HDi. Only ever had basic servicing.
He got talking to her about it and she knew a taxi driver who was recently compelled by legislature to retire his C5 at 500,000 miles.

Whatever way you look at it, massive miles means you have spent a shed load in fuel. Count it.

That's very true Lexi!!! If you worked it out you'd be shocked...

Like a 20 a day smoker working out the cost over how long that person has been smoking.. Scary indeed...

500K out of a C5 is excellent though, however you look at it...

Makes mine look barely run in! Xantia ticked over 201K a couple of days back, Saab's on a shade over 130K I think, been a while since I really checked to be honest as my servicing is always done on time rather than mileage these days.

My first 306 (N plate 1.9Xnd) was on 145K when the speedo stopped working (about five years before I got the car apparently), and that ran like new - until one day when it dumped its coolant into the passenger footwell anyway, at which point I linked the heater matrix out and sold it as I didn't have the time to sort it at the time and I needed to get to college (and it was December...so no heater in Aberdeenshire really wasn't going to work).

Ended up with a scruffy L plate 1.1Ci Fiesta after that, which while I slated it at the time looking back on it was one of the best little cars I've owned. Had it for a year and a half, did absolutely nothing to it save for change the HT leads when I got it and one engine mount, and thrashed the thing to Hell and back on a 75 mile daily commute and went all over the country in it. It was comfy, had a decent stereo and was one of those cars that for some reason you just had utter confidence in. Sold that on when it became apparent how much welding it was going to need for its next MOT! Was only a couple of months after I sold it that I came to appreciate what a little trooper it had been, and actually kind of miss it. Got back exactly the £250 I'd paid for it though, and surprisingly the guy I sold it to actually restored it (this was a few years back now when Mk IV Fiestas were still everywhere)! As far as I know it's still going around Inverurie.

I well remember the days when to see 100K out of a car was absolutely remarkable... Most had died much earlier either through terminal rust or a totally worn out engine. Now it's so commonplace as to barely raise a comment. 200K is the new 100K really and indeed, many Xantias see off 200K with ease... My old HDi did and the V6 I broke for my V6 Activa project had done 205K. Engine still like new...

IIRC, Volvo made a feature in the '70s of having a six-digit mileometer, which was simply pointless on most makes at the time.

Didn't they also make claims of longevity? Something like the average lifetime of a Volvo was 18 years?
