I worked for a taxi company a few years ago, highest mileage one was a pug806 2.0hdi 16v that was over 500k. My highest mileage one was a fiat ullysse (same car and engine) that I bought off the bay with 227k on if and full service printout, only one clutch fitted at 202k, when I sold it, for more than I paid for it she had 257k on it, only problem I had was a burst turbo intake hose whilst towing caravan. One roll of ducktape round split and towed 150 miles to destination. The front of the caravan was black tho!

I was feeling quite proud of mine hitting 215,000 on Tuesday but seems this is nothing compared to some of these old buses still running around. The thing that gets me is that I know this car was only ever serviced once a year usually before and MOT so the idea of regular servicing to increase engine life has not helped her get this high more a case of the 55mph and driving her carefully.

no one! because petrols are knackered after 100k and either need throwing away or a rebuild!

on a serious note though aren't there some esj v6 24v xantias here with 200k on them? not sure if they are a rebuild or all original though...

Annual servicing is not too bad, its better than missing services. Though I guess in a way yours has, as it must have covered more miles per year than the annual service allowed (12,500 miles).

Of course cars should be driven with mechanically sympathy, but that doesn't mean they have to be driven slowly.

Yeah, my V6 Xantia had nearly 200K and was the original engine, never had a rebuild. The gearbox had ... also Jims old blue one is on a similar mileage and is in fine health.

My Activa has 123,000 miles and the engine is brilliant, I would say it has to be one of the best performing TCT engines (certainly the best I've experienced), it also uses no oil or coolant. Its quiet refined and pulls like a train. Regular servicing and a bt of TLC, there is no reason why petrols can't cope with a good mileage.

I'm sure there is someone on here with a 2.0 16v Xantia which has done 200K+

Hmmm dont be too sure! Are you refering to ALL petrol engines in general, or just Citroen petrol engines? Either way, my girlfriends parents old Xantia was a 1.8 16v petrol and at the end it had covered 160k miles. To my knowledge, apart from a couple of sensors and a new rad etc. the engine had never been taken apart. My own car is a Rover 45 which has 151k miles on the clock - and its a petrol 1.8 k series! (the in-famous, or famous one...which ever way you look at at!). Its the original engine and it runs just as well now as it did when I bought it 4 years ago.

I have though, had one or two petrol engined cars that feel very ropey even by 80 - 90k miles. Mind you, both of the cars in question I still see running around many years after we sold them (old Astra 1.4 and old Rover 214).

I guess it all depends on how they are looked after and driven.

My/Citroenmads/Jims/Dunk/'s old V6 was just coming up on 200k with no rebuild work, and it still went like, as Chris570 would say, a stabbed rat.

I've had a few classic petrol Saab 900s, Turbos and NA engines, with over 200k on them, and seen many Mondeos and Toyotas with over that mileage on them, all petrols.

I don't think modern engines actually wear out. The cars they are in fall apart around them making them uneconomical to repair. I mean, who's going to spend £1200-1500 quid if your car needs brakes, a set of front arm bushes and a wheel bearing or two, when you could have a known good motor for half that?
