I've had a couple in the past that really were quite jammed up - most likely due
to the rubber boot seal not being on the actuating compensator of the lever on
the caliper. That got me slightly cracking the bleed screw first these days but
normally all you're doing is finding a decent grip of the teeth on the end face
of the piston to wind it back without too much fannying about! My in-extremis
use of moleys proved they will wind back in on the central threaded shaft.

In my experience, simply turning the piston does not wind it in, you need some pressure. You can apply this by hand, but it can be hard going if the piston is tight. So you need a tool that screws in slower than the auto adjuster, and since the adjuster has a multi start quick thread, any ordinary thread pitch will do.

So you can make up a windback tool with any suitable bolt, and some bits of metal and large washers, as long as it rotates the piston as it is turned. This is easy for the Xantia since both sides are RH thread. C5 I believe would need LH wind in on one side.

the proper wind back tool press's at the same time as winding

here is a kit but you can also buy these for one car mode i did also find one with a gooogly search for £29 quid but could not get the link to work
