I can't say I have noticed a higher idle.
I will listen out for it. There is no rev counter.
Perhaps I need a new thermostat. I have noticed that I can get nice hot air, but the hot air selector slider is very sensitive. I have to have up full. If I drop it a little it is very very sensitive and goes cold. I assume this was just a slider problem since I replaced the blower, and that if the thermostat wasn't working it wouldn't get that hot at all, no matter how high I turned it up.

Re: AX 1.5D starting probs
They are quite sensitive though, well the 106 one is as well.
Regarding the idle speed, it may just be working but keeping it to normal speed (without it when it was stone cold it would try to idle at about 500rpm and likely stall on de-celleration) for a minute or two.
it is easy to check this though. There will be a cable going from the pump to the thermostat housing area. You'll see it moves a small arm on the pump. Basically, when the engine is stone cold it should be pulling the cable and when its hot it should have some freeplay in it, ie its not pulling the small arm.
