Does anyone know whether a badly broken (enough to affect visibility) drivers door wing mirror glass would be an MOT fail ? The MOT on that car is due in August so would have to be taken for an MOT more or less straight away if I got it...

And is a S2 wing mirror compatible with a S1 ?

I would assume that a damaged wing mirror is a fail, as good visibility is a requirement. I also don't believe S2 mirror units fit an S1 Xantia (an e-bay search shows mirror units with dates). This one is probably what you would need;

Thanks James. I thought it would probably be a fail. If I win the auction I'd buy that complete wing mirror ASAP as there is only a matter of weeks between when I would be collecting it and when the MOT would be due.

So the wing mirror units are all the same colour regardless of the colour of the car ? (Can't say whether I've ever noticed before)

MOT manual says:

Check:

2.
Sit in the driver’s seat and check that each obligatory mirror or indirect vision device provides an adequate view to the rear.
Note: It is not generally necessary to adjust mirrors or devices for this check.

Reasons for failure:

2.
An obligatory mirror or indirect vision device:
a.
obscured, damaged or deteriorated so that the view to the rear is seriously impaired
b.
does not provide an adequate view to the rear or is incapable of being adjusted to provide an adequate view.

In which case, pretty sure that one will pass.

The complete mirror has a different part number, but the glass is the same....

I just picked the first one off e-bay that fitted the Xantia in question. It might be worth asking the supplier about colours. When I replaced the one on Gracie, the colour panel was blue. I got the silver one off the original mirror and swapped it over. You can, however, get the mirror cover primed and ready to be sprayed (but the only ones I have found so far are for S2 Xantias).

Yes, I believe it would Simon as I have a feeling the driver's side mirror is now compulsory. At the minimum it would be an advisory. Might be all wrong though... Passenger side one is not mandatory...

I think an S2 mirror could be made to work but on essential difference is the temperature senor is on the opposite mirror on an S2 so it would need a little work.

Sounds like replacing just the glass is the best approach then, provided the surround is not damaged...

I would think the broken mirror would fail. Pop along to a halfords and you will get a mirror glass that will stick over the broken one, job done easily.

Broken drivers mirror 100% a fail. Passenger is advisory. DRK had this at last MOT.

I think if the car was a keeper I'd just get the proper glass that James linked to and fit it - then I don't have to do it again later.

Well the silver problem child has been booked in for an MOT for next Tuesday - fingers crossed, although it might or might not become academic depending on how bidding goes!

You know what will happen don't you Simon. If you win the auction the problem child will sail through without even collecting an advisory on the way. If you don't win the auction the problem child will fail so badly the MOT station will need to print the fail sheet on a toilet roll...
