5 should be enough Simon but I'd tend to play safe and get 6... But then even if five only brings it to the minimum then you'll be OK... It's better to err on the minimum side rather than the maximum I find.

You may also find, if you ring him up, you might get some discount. I have a feeling in the back of my mind that he was offering clubs and forums a bit of a discount at one time. Always worth a go

EDIT: Do compare him with the price of the stuff from your local dealer, Citroen or Pug.

Too late, I've already ordered 6 litres from Opie :) My days off this week are Thursday/Friday so I'm hoping it will arrive by then. (I chose priority delivery as its only £3 more)

Now to find a funnel, strainer, pipe, and something to catch the old oil...

I certainly didn't notice it being wet with oil underneath yesterday Simon - that banjo should be easy to check though just by looking under the wheel arch.

Plenty of oil catching facilities here if you need to make use...

Thanks Richard,

I should be ok doing the oil change, also now that I think the groan is indeed the gearbox I'm quite concerned about unnecessary long distance driving until I've done at least one change. It was doing quite a bit of groaning and complaining on the way home on Saturday, it seems to get worse on long trips (oil thinning with temperature perhaps ?) and every groan could potentially be damaging the clutches/brakes, so I don't want to push my luck. :?

All going well I'll get it done on Thursday.

You're right, I don't think there are any significant oil leaks, engine, gearbox or hydraulic for that matter. The engine oil and hydraulic oil has never needed topping up and there are never any oil spots in my park... thats not to say that there couldn't be a very slow drip from the gearbox that occurs only at high temperature while driving of course...

When I do the change I'll check the level first and also check the banjo for signs of leaking, if I see any sign of a leak I'll get replacement washers and replace them when I do a second change in a few weeks. (I assume that it's best to change the washers while the oil is drained to avoid losing half the oil on the ground  )

Nope. Unless you do it with the engine running Simon, you'll loose hardly a drop

The Lexia can show gearbox oil temperature, the maximum I've seen is 100 degrees during spirited country road driving, which seems to be in line with expected temperatures according to the 4HP20 training manual...

Well it looks like 6 litres of yellow cats pee, err I mean LT71141 has arrived. Actually it doesn't smell of much at all which just goes to show how poor my sense of smell is... Ordered late on Sunday night from Opie Oils, sitting on my door step tonight, can't complain about that!

All going well I'll get it changed on Thursday and cross my fingers like crazy that it either fixes the groaning or makes a major improvement... [-o<

That is good service Simon :-D

I'd get your sniffing equipment checked out if I were you

If you've read my blog you'll see I've changed a gas filter today and I can still smell the stenching agent everywhere  I have a very sensitive nose... It's a curse sometimes...

Fingers crossed the new oil makes an improvement [-o<

Yep, I'm pretty sure if I'd ordered from the local Citroen agent I'd still be waiting to hear back from them next week...as they're quite slow...

No use, despite having a rather large nose it doesn't work properly  From what I can remember I had a childhood illness that caused about an 80% loss in sense of smell... some types of scent I can smell quite well like cooking meat, but other scents I can't smell at all... almost as if my nose is "colour blind"

That's a shame about your sense of smell Simon. One thing, if you can smell meat then you can smell when dinner is cooking and that's not a bad thing...

Still, feel very grateful you're not getting the full pong of LT71141  The stuff is so revolting to me it makes me feel nauseous after a while.

And this bloody stenching agent is still driving me mad

This is mine

It's a nearly a novel now at 145 pages!!!

If you want to read about a 4HP20 rebuild and the restoration of my original V6 have a read of Brief Encounter II - The Sequel

You can read my progress from knowing nothing whatsoever about the 4HP20 to having the car up and running and on the road again...

It's got everything; high drama, emotion, unexpected twists, bloodshed, violence, sweat, tears...

But no s3x...

That's because it wasn't written by Barbara Cartland.
