Stick to the earlier 8v 2.0HDi if you don't want a DPF, check the engine cover for the 16v badging to be sure. Have you considered taking the FAP off the 2.2?

I would agree, 8 valve engines were made until about 05, as far as I know none had DPF in fact the 90 bhp version doesn't have a DMF either

Have you tied the swirl valve ball joint down? - With it just flapping engine performance can be erratic, cable tie-ing it pointing towards bulkhead gives back low down perf so you pull skin off rice puddings when pulling away. Fuel consumption won't be affected either.

So what mainly causes the problems with the DPF's? is it letting the Eolys run dry, lack of servicing? short trips to shops and back?SaabC5 wrote:Stick to the earlier 8v 2.0HDi if you don't want a DPF, check the engine cover for the 16v badging to be sure. Had my 2.2 for 2 years and only related warning I have had is "additive minimum level", the additive tank was refilled within two days. I do travel approx 38 miles a day with approx 8 miles on duel carriage way at 65mph+.

Hi, yes, it's secured towards the bulkhead, so no issues there, and good performance and torque. ... just notice that mpg worsens by about 10% when the swirl actuator is not operating.Monkeyfeet wrote:Have you tied the swirl valve ball joint down? - With it just flapping engine performance can be erratic, cable tie-ing it pointing towards bulkhead gives back low down perf so you pull skin off rice puddings when pulling away. Thanks for the info - if I decided to get another C5 it would definitely be a non-DPF 110 model (90bhp is just too underpowered for this weight of car in my view).
Oh absolutely. It's on my list but having recently being made redundant I cannot afford £300 at the moment but when circs change it'll be the first thing I get done.SaabC5 wrote:Have you considered taking the FAP off the 2.2?
Like Waynedance, I haven't had any DPF issues yet, but that's because my C5 had a new DPF and Eolys 2 years ago ..... but I know problems will start to occur the older the DPF gets and the more it gets blocked up over time. Awful, awful things. Hope the Eurocrat that sentanced our diesel cars to suffer with these completely inefficient DPFs is proud of his/her work.

Short runs are the culprit, the DPF never gets up to operating temperature to burn the carbon deposits away. Thats why long runs are essential to FAP/DPF fitted cars, the EOLY's fluid allows the carbon to burn away at a lower temperature than it would otherwise.

Why £300?, I removed mine myself and got a member on this forum with a lexia to turn the DPF off, beer tokens were exchanged and job done.
Where are you based?

Re: C5 2.2 HDi Auto - High fuel consumption?
I'd like to remove my DPF and I have a Lexia.
Is there a definitive guide on how to get rid of it?

Re: C5 2.2 HDi Auto - High fuel consumption?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think lexia could remove dpf settings, I used ECUsafe and a galletto cable. If there is not a guide already written I will post one.

Re: C5 2.2 HDi Auto - High fuel consumption?
A Galletto cable (whatever that is!) is required).
As I don't have a Lexia, another Forum member did the job for me and from memory, it was just a case of telling the car that the DPF is no longer fitted.
The DPF was then removed, the inners knocked out and the sensors (top of bulkhead) unplugged.
It seemed that simple but probably wasn't!

Re: C5 2.2 HDi Auto - High fuel consumption?
I think DPF removal is mentioned in several posts but there's not one overall description.
A full guide would be really appreciated.

Re: C5 2.2 HDi Auto - High fuel consumption?
Edging slightly off topic I realise: I've removed my dpf/fap and would be happy to help write a guide to others. It's the 'proof' reading side from someone who hasn't done the removal that would really be useful.

That guide sounds great Monkeyfeet
For me, I do basic servicing and the odd job, but I've never even taken an exhaust off, and don't have Galleta or a Lexia, so I reckon I'd rather punt up the cash and get a reputed specialist to do it. OR.... if anyone in the North East was happy and able to do it for me, and was 100% sure they'd not leave existing "anti-pollution / fuel additive" error messages on (I think this only happens when people remove the DPF innards, map out of the ECU, but forget to unplug the sensor), I'd be really happy to pay a good price....
I am in DH6 2BF (County Durham, near A19 / East Coast".
Cheers.

Re: C5 2.2 HDi Auto - High fuel consumption?
Hi Longyear, sounds like you've come round to the idea of having ( hopefully) a forum member help you to take off the DPF!
With a bit of luck it'll be when and not if someone local does it. I'd like to send the raw notes to go through when you do the job to help me correct any mistakes etc if you wouldn't mind?
You're right about the error messages appearing if you knock out the filter but don't reprog.

Cheers, yes that sounds fine.
But as I said, I'm not equipped or confident to actually do it myself, but if a forum member was confident to do it (for which I'd happily pay for their time), I could then potentially follow your guide as the job progressed.
