Yep! that happened to me too, one brush wire had corroded right through and there were segments burned on the commutator, actually the brush wire may have fused due to high current caused by shorted winding, I had been putting in a bigger fuse each time it blew, maybe jhad reached the point where the brush wire was a better fuse than the fuse :-)

You may be able to find a good used one, there are plenty coming on to the market now, or your own may be repairable, the one I'm using had green copper corrosion eaten through about 5mm of the wire in the motor, I cut it out and soldered in some new wire and it's been fine now for over a year.

New pumps cost in the region of £500 so not a good idea on a cheapo car.

First thing to do of course is get it diagnosed properly.

Would there be any funny noises come from pump prior to failure?

Maybe maybe not, loss of a winding or two might make the motor sound a bit rough but you would probably have to have your ear close to it to hear.

As has been said there are pumps appearing on the S/H market, as far as I can see after about 2003 the motors are all the same might be that the valve block / ECU are the same as well, however don't worry about it too much, it is easy to remove the motor from a scrapper and fit it to your valve block / ECU.

It's self bleeding but you might have to raise the pressure in the reservoir to about 5 psi to get the self bleed started, sometimes it will go without but that's the recommended way. Cobble together an adapter for the lid with a bike valve and pump it up a bit, doesn't need much.

I think any pump you can find will do for an SX trim car, the important thing is age / mileage, less of either is good, the newer the pump the longer it will be before you have to do the job again :-). Would suggest stripping the motor of the "new" pump to check for corrosion / water ingress in the brush area also look for blackened commutator segments which would be an indication of a winding short. When putting it back together the use of silicon grease on the brush wires and connections to limit water damage is good also take care to ensure that the cover is well sealed against water ingress.

Definitely ONLY LDS - it does say on the reservoir!

There are bleed valves under the car, cachaciero has mentioned this in other threads, can't say where they are as my car isn't here right now.

Yes, to prime the pump you will need to pressurise the reservoir.

Your car does have a front height sensor, it will be attached to the anti roll bar.
As for detailed instructions on commissioning the new pump, wait a bit for someone more knowledgeable to show up. Likely cachaciero or wheeler will be best informed on this matter.

Apply a pressure of 0,5 bar in the LDS fluid reservoir (using a FACOM 920 tool) .
Start the engine .
Wait for the vehicle height to stabilise .
Put the vehicle in the "high" position .
Lower the vehicle to the low position .
Turn the steering from lock to lock in each direction .
Stop the engine .
Check the LDS fluid level .
