Here's a few pics of a Dutch Zx16v with serious rust issues

Very nasty , the car in question was broken for parts then crushed , my Zx16v is a similar age but with virtually zero rust , I suppose too it depends if the car was used much in the winter months and if so jetwashed underneath to remove road salt & crud build up .

Ok going outside now to check, you say strut tops, is this under the bonnet?

Me too, rust is a pet hate of mine, once it sets in its very costly to put right.

C5s don't have rusting problems at the moment, perhaps when they age more they might but generally Citroens hold up very well if they are looked after. Xantias are hardly rot boxes, but this area is the worst.

I can see C5 sills potentially being an area to keep an eye on, behind the plastic sill covers but under the sill, a couple of very early cars I have seen have had surface rust there.

Yes, some strut tops do look quite rotten, again on early cars. I have not heard of one failing but they can get surface rust. My middle C5 was quite bad with rusty looking strut tops and the sills on the underside of the car was getting surface rust, nothing to worry about as its very thick metal and was only surface/paint rust. Our 2002 C5 had brilliant strut tops, no corrosion in sight, as with our C5IIs, however I given them a spraying with some rust preventing fluid on every service inspection.

Yes, pop of the plactis covers both sides (small one on the NS and large one which covers coolant and LDS tanks on the OF) and you will see the strut tops. Check if they are rusty, I would spray them with some rust preventing stuff while your there.

As I say, never known a C5 strut top fail, but you dont want rust in that area.

C5s with the plastic covers need to be watched. One of the front sill covers on my folk's C5 got knocked loose at the bottom. I was amazed at the amount of small stones and dirt that had got trapped between them and the sills. The car had only 80K miles at this stage. There is also a lot of other plastic panels under the C5 as well. Where these panels meet metal, you are asking for rot.

My 'new' C5 had part of the sill cover missing and I was pleased to see that the sill was completely intact and free from rust.
Pinched the corresponding piece from the estate and that was fine too.

My R reg s2 2.1TD had rust - none sunroof model

My R reg s1 (but is a 95 car as far as I can make out, just late registered) 1.9 doesn't have rust there - sunroof model.

My T reg s2 activa was a none sunroof model, and wasn't rusting there...

Same on our (2002) C5 ... removed the sill covers and gave the sills a clean and
a coat of Dinitrol. No rust, paint undamaged. Renewed the plastic fixers while at it.
