I haven't driven an 1.9 TD Auto combo. But the 2.1 TD Auto in XM form is very agreeable and pleasant. Its not quick, but its a nice way to waft around.

If Citroen were ever able to mate an auto box onto a 2.5 TD lump, that would be a nice big cruiser until the 2.5 lump shreds the box to bits!

Going further up scale, the C6 2.7 HDI Auto is very well suited, and so is the C6 2.2 HDI Auto. I was pleasantly impressed with the 2.2.

I had a drive in a 2002 2.2 136 HDi C5 Exclusive SE Automatic yesterday, quite a nice conbination. It does not respond like my 2.0 138 HDi but its ok, the box was very smooth and I liked the tip tronic bit too, which gives you some of the control of a manual should you need it. I was impressed, I have to say.

If it went wrong though it would get costly unless your willing to strip the box yourself. Saying that, its about £700+ to replace a DMF and clutch kit, which im sure is still cheaper than most autobox rebuilds and not to mention autos use more fuel.

I was thinking of the new 175 odd BHP 2.2 Chris. I haven't driven the old 2.2 though. The French sales agent of one of my previous employers had a series 1 2.2 C5 Auto Estate. In Exclsuive spec too. It had 475K Km on the clock. On its original gearbox. He put most of the miles on it, all he ever serviced was fluids and brakes. It was a superb car, autobox smooth as silk, and plenty of go from the 2.2 lump.

Would the 173bhp automatic C5 be in the C5III? Its a rare enough find in a C5II with a manual box, automatics are very thin on the ground.

Good to hear about another pleased C5 owner. :-D

The earlier 2.2 is not at all a bad engine, it can be made very reliable if the DPF is removed and the EGR blocked off. It seemed to suit the autobox very well.
