That's the way I have been driving for many years and the reason why my front tyres last for 30,000 miles and brake pads the same or more as Jim commented, things tend not to break either. I didn't drive like that in my teens but cars were not very fast then and they didn't stop as well either.

Filled up my tank this morning. £96!

Drive to London and back from Nottingham.

Refuelled. 24.67 litres for 285 miles. Think I actually did more clicks and dribbling on the refill. Pump actually clicked at 22.22 litres.

52.5mpg. Not bad for an XUD9 with Bosch pump. Extra urban figure is 53.0mpg. Combined will be 4-5 mpg less.

Not bad at all for an XUD as you say. The 2.2 hdi in the C5 only manged 45 mpg when we went up to Kent at the weekend, the 2.0L in the 406 would have done 60. I have fitted a tuning box to the C5, goes like the clappers but fuel no better, anyone want to buy a racing C5?

How far do you guys drive into the red light? I'd owned my car from new and up until last year i was getting nervous at 80miles past the first red light indication on the level and would always fill up before 100. But I experimented last year and found that she would go to 250 miles past the first red light indication on the level before running dry at about 50-55 mph on 20-30 mile country journeys using the techniques above. (with an Hdi its east to prime again .. just turn the key 1 click a few times and the lift pump does all the hard work) So now I'm regularly running 150 miles past the red. which if I'm careful give me just over 1000 miles range.. but thats really hard work and a lot of concentration.
But I guess that will be down to individual cars and how their fuel sender is set up.
Incidentally I always found that my Xantia would give the best mpg when I had 1 or 2 up front and a load in the boot.. i.e no rear seat passengers.. maybe its just the lack of kids makes the driving easier!!
Mpg wise I've been keeping records for years and only got close to 60 on a few of occasions.. mostly is about the 57/58 and in January it seems to regularly dip to 53.
If you're in to running good quality thinner oil Costco were doing Mobil 1 diesel 0W 15 for about £27 for 4 lit .. locally its sold for about £50 so if you're a regular Costco user that one saving alone pays for your registration!!

They are very good figures, you must drive like me :-D The average over 6000 miles for the 406 was 54.4 but that was helped by a number of long journeys where it exceeded 60 mpg, driving it locally gives around 50 mpg but even then we live in a rural area so rarely get into slow moving traffic, the worst conditions for mpg are town stop start driving.

I did 100 miles on the red light in the XM which I thought was pretty good but I wouldn't like to chance more without a gallon of diesel in the boot.

Due to the TDi in the Alhambra struggling to get 40mpg ive been using my new Xantia more for work during the week days. Over the last 2 tanks it has averaged 53 mpg which is amazing going over all the cotswold hills and some short journeys between schools and sitting in traffic. My old c5 with the same engine only managed 46 mpg in the same conditions (same driver and load). Shows what a difference weight can make.

The Xantia feels quicker than the c5 and way way way faster than the Alhambra, so I dont have to push it hard to get up the hills.

The 2.2 C5 with the tuning box pins you to the seat but goodness knows what the fuel consumption would be if you drove it like that.

According to a very rough calculation I managed 36.37 MPG on my recent trip to near stassborg and back which is not too bad as I used the toll roads so was travelling at 80mph for much of the way!
Travelled 1200 miles approx and used aroung 150 litres of fuel. Considereing it was vegetable oil which I beleive returns a slightly lower MPG than diesel thats not bad at all!

I've done 110 miles before, after the light comes on and stays on, but it tends to make your testes retract inside your body especially when you are on the M1 late at night and the next services are 30 miles away!!

I've done 104 miles after the orange light comes on in the Berlingo 2.0HDi I've got.

I concur about the retracting testes.

Stepto1 wrote:Guys, can I just ask, how are you working out your mpg figures?

My speedo and odometer in my Xantia HDI 110 over read by 10%, as do most cars.
The speedo in my Berlingo 2.0HDi is 2mph out at 70mph, and weirdly, dead on at an indicated 100 (on a private test track, of course). What is odder is that the official top speed isn't even that high, and that's without the tuning box.

It's averaging about 46mpg, but either spends it's life pottering around town or having me drive it in a spirited manner around the back roads in South Berks. The brakes get a bit warm sometimes, don't they DickieG? :-D

I used to get 41mpg out of my 2.1TD XM cruising at 90mph up for a 450 mile round trip every weekend, that was running on veg too.

Yes I agree.. even when you know she'll happily go 180-200 1'm always filling up just before the 150.
If you look when the ignition is switched off, how far down the fuel needle goes. That's about where it ended up when I ran out after 250 miles... and yes I did have a can of diesel in the back.
I must stress though this only works if you measure from the first time the light comes on and even then its only accurate if you're not driving up (or down) hill. And don't do it if you have a heart condition!! [-o<
