Fully agree with these performance comments. The 2.2 definitely has it's own "feel" to it. Eg after driving around in a 2.0 petrol car the 2.2 C5 seems sort of, well, "stodgy". However, I just got back from France yesterday, loaded up with 4 adults, all of our gear (loads) and A LOT of wine. Gawd know how much weight in the big top-box alone - I've just unloaded the car and reassured myself why I don't go much over 60 (so I could stop quickly). Anyway, an example of what impressed me on the m'way home was by the way it just wanted to power right up the steep incline out of Dover on the A2. It's only then you can appreciate the guts it obviously must have hidden away. Round town 1st 2nd gear just doesn't seem like it's got the same motor at all.SaabC5 wrote:Some thoughts on the 2.2's performance. Clogged pipe leading to EGR valve really blunts performance as does the vacuum swirl valve control. (pig to swap out). Even then the 2.2 doesn't set the world alight in 1st and 2nd gear, 3rd and 4th gear however are very interesting, in a straight pull from 40mph in 3rd the 2.2 mullers the 2.0. Its really usefull in the real world for entering motorways and effecting a safe overtake in limited space. After a timing belt/water pump change i saw an average of 60mpg over a 200 mile run using the A3, M25, M1. I do however have a tuning box fitted so this no doubt has an effect on performance/MPG.

Re: C5 2.2Hdi performance
One thing I would appreciate is some info on performance / consumption on a post 2004 2.2's upto 2006.
As far as I can remember all the comments/ complaints about 2.2's I have seen in these forums are early cars i.e pre-facelift would be really interesting to see if the facelifted 2.2's are the same or if there are differences / improvments. I believe that the software revision in the ECU is different.
Anyway anyone reading this who has a 2.2 auto or manual built between end 2004 mid 2006 give us some fuel consumption numbers.
Note in 2006 the 2.2 engine changed to the 173 Bhp version, only interested in the 138 bhp version.

Of course the estates going to be a slightly different system isn't itPeter.N. wrote:I have some new ones but they are for the estate although I think the centre box is the same. I think both of the scrap cars have newish systems but unfortunately they are going on tommorrow and I'm going to the dentist this afternoon.
