You mean like this?

It was a whisteling/whining sound that was very irritating. Turned out to be a stuck filter housing "by-pass valve".
I have heard it on many HDI:s, and their valves were also half stuck.

It sounds really loud because the camera was very close to the valve.
But it was loud enough to be very audible with the engine running..
I am allergic to noises..
Now after a new valve that fixed this whistling sound, and a fuel pressure regulator that fixed that terrible humming/vibrating resonance sound, it is soooo quiet. I could not imagine how quiet a HDI actually can be. Lots of sounds originate from the fuel supply system.

There should be a hummig noise on priming but if its louder than normal it's probably the fuel filter housing, changing the filter complete with housing should cure it. I've changed quite a few for this.

Hmmm......does this 'whistling' sound a bit like a distant siren rising and falling with engine revs and could it be responsible for intermittent engine cutting out?

sounds like an air leak that.. the whistle is suction of air.. the stalling confirms air ingress... is the seal sat correctly around the top of the filter house after the top part is screwed off?? is the circular gold flat spring present that sits on top of the filter element before the top is screwed on??

Haven't checked that. BTW this an HDi 2.0 in a Picasso. First Hdi I've owned. Still coming to grips with it.More familiar with XUD
engines. Have replaced the in tank pump or rather the dealer did .They reported the cap was cracked and had been held with a large hose clamp. I told them to put it back as there was no replacement available( not an uncommon occurrence in our part of the world. Probably why I import most of my spares. That and the outrageous prices the franchise holder charges) I now have one and a seal awaiting replacement. Not a doddle on a Picasso as there is no ' inspection hatch'. In light of your info I think this may be contributing to the problem if the screw cap is leaking.Thank you for the heads up.

Update on my previous post. Yes the circular gold spring is present and the filter element looks ok but I'll replace when they arrive.Noticed one of the rather rubbish looking thin wall plastic(?) fuel lines to the filter housing had a kink in it almost bending round on itself. Part of this line(main supply to the filter) had been replaced with more conventional thick wall reinforced fuel line so replaced the kinked bit with more of the conventional stuff. Have been using the car for local running and so far so good. Too early to tell if this has cured the fault but I live in hope.
