Well, I'm going to give it a good once over tomorrow and check all the hoses.

I'm driving back up to Nottingham next weekend so will check the mpg then, see if it's got any better with some use and new filters.

I'll do the oil. Which reminds me, I've got 10litres of 10w-30 semi-synth that I used in my 16v. Is this ok for the oil burner? 5k service intervals about right?

Just a thought, it's just had its cambelt and water pump done.

Would it be obvious if the job had been done wrong?

That sounds right to me. Others are quoting S2 torque range. I've never had a non HDi pull from below 2000.
I'm not. I never had an S2 TD. Max torque, IIRC on a 1.9TD is at 2250rpm
I had to recheck the posts. You stated 18800 rpm which I took to mean 1800rpm.. I can see you do not have an S2 but I must have been referring to your post.

As I said, approx. 2200rpm you can start to feel it spin up. That concurs with your latest post of 2250rpm. So probably just a typo on your part on your first post.

There is no benefit in revving much above 3000rpm.

To help with efficiency, change up low and note the speed at which 2200 rpm occurs in each gear. That is the speed you may want to consider accelerating to in the lower gear before changing up. You'll be on the max. torque at every gear change then.

It would be very interesting to hear DickieG's views on this. From an advanced driving point-of-view, it's up to you how you trade-off efficiency with vehicle sympathy. There are mnay trains of thought on this subject. Best advice is when you have clear roads, accelerate briskly up to the speed limit rather than crawling. If roads are more congested, accelerate less briskly. Always look as far ahead as you can and plan according to that.

There's no point in accelerating hard, to then have to brake to a standstill. Plan well ahead. Efficency should improve but as I said before, it doesn't sound like it's your style that's affecting the efficiency. It's early days for you anyway if you've never had a diesel.

As a note, when I achieved the 53 mpg (manufacturer's figure of 53.5 mpg is max for 1996 1.9TD Manual 5 speed), it did involve some motorway driving, some urban and some country lanes. It was astounding and I've never got near it since. I would like to try and exceed manufacturer's figures and do Nottingham - Mauterndorf in Austria on one tank. I'm sure it's achievable.

I've got a lock-off kit somewhere you can borrow. That's probably the quickest way of checking if they have put it on wrong.

Can't recall on it manifests itself if it is a tooth out. Someone did tell me once. Put it this way - it wouldn't improve it!

Cassie really starts to fly from 3K and pulls up to 4.5K so if I really need to shift I'll take it up to 4.5K then change up catching it at about 3K and then repeat.
Of course if I want to save fuel I stick around the 2K mark.

Right, gave the engine a good going over and have found a few things.

There WAS. A couple of splits in the vacuum pipe that runs to the fuel pump, BUT the splits hadn't gone all the way through and still seems to be airtight. Cut the bad but off and all is well.

The throttle cable was out if adjustment by SIX 'ribs'. Sorted this and now the engine picks up from tickover withouth the big flat spot there was before. Also the throttle now opens fully. Heck of a lot better now, pulls from 2000-3500 really strongly and doesn't go 'off boost' as much.

The oil is very black. This may sound funny but in my 16V the oil was still golden even after 6k. Is dirty oil normal in these engines?

Micky,(as I've started calling the mouse that's been living under my bonnet), has nibbled the inertia stop button, washer bottle lid and dipstick! Thought they liked cheese!

Let's hope the mpg goes up a little now?

Rodents seem always drawn to "soft" plastics. I have heard one theory they get a sort of high from eating them.

Duh, I should have remembered the throttle cable adjustment too. I've had that issue in the past with my TD Estate.

Anyway - the oil.. Yes, IME a diesel engine will make the oil filthy within about 30 seconds of changing it and starting the engine...

hmm it's not just you steptoe..

I drive hard, but only when in the rev range and when there is any point, (at that) and all other times i am driving to avoid the brakes etc..

I have no cat, no EGR, and have been averaging 36 now for months.. saying that, I am runing on WVO.. I guess that could account for something.. I will follow with interest..

Now you mention it, in my contribution to the thread I stated my lowest was 35.170mpg.. I was running on Bio (not recommended as it destroys things - it might be good for the environment but not for a S1 engine!).
