carparts4less.co.uk list the correct longer cable, at around £15 - although they quote the length as 1313mm... I tried to measure the cables off mine as I had some difficulty with fitting the OS cable, but any measurements bore no resemlance to the quoted length....

It's my understanding that a cable's nominated length is normally the acting length; if it has crimped butts at each end then it's the distance inside those butts. Sheath is another matter altogether.

If you calc'ed the typical loads each end (lever pull and pad reaction force) you could probably pester someone on Eng-Tips to crunch the numbers and give a likely elongation for nominated service life (cycles).

Fluid hose lengths are another story; I have never seen any sort of rule about how they are spec'd (extremity of seat?) as so often stated length and actual are way off.

Thanks addo, guessed as much, but wanted it in writing! I assume that where a cable ends in a clevis pin arrangement, then the measurement would be to the clevis pin's centre-line.

Thanks

That would be the intelligent thought; in reality most automotive cable applications have variants that differ by appreciably more than a few mm or half that pin diameter.

Simon,

I have just checked the Ouinton hazel site where it quotes

Cable, parking brake Length: 1313 mm
Fitting Position: Left Front BC 2807

Cable, parking brake Length: 1364 mm
Fitting Position: Right Front BC 3766

I input your vehicle as V6 hatchback Mk 1 and Mk 2 have the same details

FYI

I've used QH ones in the past. They seem OK and are a lot cheaper than the genuine article...

Just double checked on GSF, if I look up a 2 litre petrol Xantia (my old Xantia) they list the exact same part number and length for the left cable as the 3 litre V6. Really GSF ? Looks like they have a near enough is good enough one size fits all policy...

I looked on carparts4less as you suggested and they do indeed seem to list a 1313mm cable for the V6 and when I looked up a 2 litre petrol they list 1262mm with a different part number, so I guess they do have a longer left cable available, and for a decent price too, but then the plot thickens - if I search for the V6 they don't list any available cable for the right hand handbrake cable, and if I search for the 2 litre petrol, which I understand uses the same right hand cable they do list a match for it, but its out of stock!

So I'm now in the crazy situation where I might have to get a left cable from carparts4less and a right cable from GSF! Who would have thought buying correct handbrake cables would be such a chore... Still haven't quite decided what to do yet, I have the day off today so I've been running errands for the car trying to collect parts and tools for various jobs and was hoping to either have got handbrake cables over the counter today or have the correct ones on order from somewhere..

Is there a reason for not crossing to the Citroën specs, or at least using them as a starting point?

Ok I decided to just order the long left cable from carparts4less and the right cable from GSF. Silly, but saves me a lot of time running around.

That's Australiano actually. :P But yeah, 1295 left, 1335 right are the official lengths from Service.Citrus for your car (specific by driver's position, engine and gearbox).

Well I spoke too soon. #-o

Ordered the calliper bolts on Wednesday 13th from the local Citroen dealer, told they would arrive 2 days later on the Friday. Went in on Friday, no they haven't come yet, should be in on Monday, will give you a call. No call on Monday, go in on Tuesday, now the story is sorry they're on back order, they won't arrive until Tuesday the 26th!!

Which is a complete disaster as I had arranged to visit lexi this Sunday to do the job, and now I won't have any caliper bolts #-o I think I'm just going to have to postpone the job, as I don't feel comfortable not being prepared with new bolts when the risk of shearing a bolt and putting the car off the road for an unknown period of time is quite high, particularly when we have holidays booked at the start of July that involve using the car...

I would try another dealer a bit further away but chances are they won't have any in stock either and have to back order them and not be able to get them in time either... besides the next nearest dealer is too far away to get to and back during my meagre lunch break at work.

Glad to see that Citroen dealers here are just as useless and unreliable as they are in NZ...

Thanks Kenny,

But the estate uses different size bolts from the hatchback. I've got no time left this week to do anything about it anyway as we're running around organising holidays for July, so it'll just have to wait a bit longer. I feel better now I've had my rant anyway  On the plus side one of my handbrake cables has arrived. :)
