Right you lot have definatly convinced me to go for a later Xantia HDi, can you tell me what the differences are within the HDis ie, 110 BHP or 90 BHP etc 16 or 8 v, which ones have the better 8v lump in, is it the earlier phase 2 Xantias or just a certain model, I dont know much about the spec of Xantias TBH, I have always been a big Volvo fan and still am along with BMWs, I have always liked Xantias for some reason, even when they were first launched I was working as an apprentice in a garage and they are a hell of a lot of car, and extremely good value in my eyes, I couldnt afford one at the time as I was only young, but as I got older I have had a few while buying and selling motors but not an HDi.

As for the 1.9 I got the other day, it was spared the crusher in the final hour :)

My mums car needed a MOT and wasnt going to pass to easily, so instead of scrapping the Xantia, I gave it to her and scrapped her Rover, I did however scrap the 2.1 I had last week, for those who dont know iam a car scrap dealer by trade and did quite well out of the 2.1 as scrap, in fact more than I paid for it and more than I would have got for it with the shot spheres, I cleared over £300 after the CAT and alloys so not a bad deal :)

I intend to keep the 1.9 running for a while as its had soooo many new/recon parts fitted, it also rides/drives divine compared to the 2.1 I had, the 2.1 was defo a lot more powerful, in fact I thought there was something wrong when I first drove the 1.9, but have now got used to pushing the throttle pedal a bit further and it purrs along lovely, it does have a few marks here and there but you can see it has been kept on top of mechanically, it was an old Rochdale Taxi part of a fleet of 20 Xantias and was the very last one left, the firms owner had kept hold of it as it was such a reliable motor.

So in a few weeks I will start scouring the ads for a nice HDi for SWMBO :) I appreciate all the help you guys have given me and look forward to some great times as a HDi owner, all the best and thanks again, Steve :)

Did you save the 2.1 bumper??

All Xantia HDi's are 8v, theyre all the same engine basically, the 110hp engine has an intercooler and ECU controlled wastegate where the 90hp doesn't have either - just a non intercooled and 'normal' wastegate controller, ie, it'll open at a given pressure which is adjustable using the threaded arm on the wastegate.

The 110 is the one to go for, I find even my intercooled 1.9TD gets a bit sluggish during a good thrash due to heat soak on the intercooler (all 1.9 TurboD Xantias were front mount intercooled), so I imagine a non intercooled HDi would suffer the same issues.

Thanks, what is the auxilary heater on the HDis?

Is it a pre heater to warm the interior of the car up? If so how does it work, is it electrical or diesel heated? Is it just on the Exclusive models or all HDis?

its deisel powered connected to the cooling system... fitted behind the nearside corner of the bumper.. fitted to later Exclusives only from AROUND W reg cars onwards... yu know when as theres no coolant heater in the heater pipe on the bulk head... its automatically operated by the engine ecu when the coolant is below 60 deg... switchs off there after.. ok when it works bt expensive to fix if the fan blower is buggered...

Mine has the electric one in the cooling system. I don't think C5s come with an Eberspächer unless ordered specially. Perhaps in Europe/Scandinavia where they are essential.
