Well, it won't be the gearbox holding the job up ChrisChris570 wrote:with any luck the next 8 days should see the engine back in the bay......

It went smoothly except for a need to make an emergency visit to Halfrauds this morning. My T27 Torx bit decided to crumble to nothing and I needed to get a replacement quick. T27 is an odd size and locally only Halfrauds stock them. I was there for doors opening...
I must admit the Torx bit in question had been terribly abused on another gearbox, even ending up in my impact driver at one point to shift a particularly tight one. I'll forgive it for throwing in the towel...
The rebuild took a full day although a good deal of that time was cleaning until everything sparkled. I take my time reassembling as any errors would require the engine to be lifted and I'm not too keen on that

No pictures from today but this picture sequence from one of my previous rebuilds covers it pretty well...
Chris, come and collect at your leisure

Well yes, He's done all the other work whilst I had the 'box so all he needs to do is pop the engine and box back in, plug a few connectors together, fill up with coolant and job's a good 'un... If it takes more than a day I'll be disappointedDeanxm wrote: Dont know what that Chris is playing about at, should be driving home in it for christmas no problem![]()

I must say doing an engine out job on an XM is a joy to behold. So much easier than a Xantia

I'm aiming at ICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCR for the car to be running so I'm not too fussed. In all seriousness I don't want to rush the job because there's so many things I want to get right first. I also don't want her on the road until the weather improves as if she's driveable I suspect I'll be tempted. There is also the little matter of strut tops to contend with so that will all take time.
The original plan was to have the engine back in by the end of jan/mid feb so we're well ahead of time here

But, Mr Jim, BIIIIIIG thank you, I have popped a little (well big actually) present in the boot for you. If you're extra nice I might pop it round to you tomorrow
