When i did the lift pump on my Xantia just betore christmas i didn,t have too much trouble with it!
I found it easier to screw locking ring back on with the pump held down against the springs as you said! had to be careful with the sealing ring as it seems very easy to dislodge it from it,s seat but once the locking ring was started on it,s threads it went on ok without disturbing the seal!
With the locking ring being made of plastic i would imagine it would be quite easy to get the threads crossed, have you tried putting locking ring on without the pump and seal in place so you can make sure it screws on ok?
At least that would elimate/confirm a problem with crossed threads?
It seems to be one of those jobs where three hands would be useful!!
If the threads are crossed i would imagine the only solution would be a new locking ring??
Sorry i cant be any more help than that!! Whereabouts are you located by the way?
Regards.

Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sounds like I am basically on the right lines and maybe just need a bit of luck.

I do not think I have cross threaded the ring, but tomorrow I will remove the pump again and get the ring moving freely.
Was reluctant to take pump out again as already said, it was sods law that this happened with a full tank of diesel. Getting it out without spillage on the carpets is tricky. The smell lasts forever.

Think I will look at a small amount of grease to hold the seal in place a little better.

I had to stop just before my post as from lovely sunshine things turned black within 10 minutes, thunder lightning and hail ensued.
Probably a sign

Thanks again, I will report again tomorrow.

Mine gave a bit of grief with the seal - I think I dislodged it originally. I took rather more care with a new one, and it went in fine. Can't think of any tips - it's just your normal 10-fingers-per-hand job.

OK,

Job completed this morning :)

Removed pump again.
Checked ring for damage to thread, no signs.
Cleaned threads thoroughly on both tank and ring.
Used a mall amount of petroleum jelly on thread and hand fitted and tightened down a few times.

Refitted seal with a mall amount of petroleum jelly applied to seal before seating.
Refitted pump.
Held this down against the springs and did not release at any stage!
Screwed down ring.
With the petroleum jelly I managed to hand screw this all the way down to "zero" discernible up and down movement of the pump.

Tightened with wide flat blade and mallet.
Pipes and electrics reconnected.

I had already replaced the fuel filter yesterday.
Reconnected battery.
Operated the ignition switch for 5 seconds about 5 or six times.
Initially I could here a bubbling noise in the tank, I think that was the air being purged out of the fuel lines via the tank return pipework.

The five or six 5 second pump operations seem to prime the system and engine started straight away.

Ah, that's one job out of the way.

Need to get engine management light cleared now to see what other faults, if any are present, from what I have read around this forum it will be a dealer/Citroen specialists.
Typical that none of the widely available code readers seem to be successful with the Xantia :(

I did that job on a BMW 5 series a couple of years ago and ended up dumping about a gallon of diesel on Tesco's forcourt.

Look for a new bus shelter at Hunters Lodge - that was how we lost the green XM. :-D

Check the "Supersticky: forum for continually recurring questions." which is seen
on the upper part of the main page.
There is a topic "Lexia Locations" :) ---> direct link to lexia locations
