Don't feel bad about it Richard, those gearboxes are pretty specialist things... You know more about cars than you might think and besides I bet you know much more about your specialist subject that I ever will

I might know a bit about those particular automatic gearboxes but I can confidently tell you I know nothing about any other automatic gearboxes. I know very little about any other cars apart from Xantias as well....

I finally got a spare gearbox for free =D> :)
The guy i got it from says the converter is dead, and that should be the only problem. I'll try to take it apart, make it go, at replace it with the other. Then i can take the other apart later on. It will reduce the time the car is on the lift.

Make sure that the replacement transmission has the same gear ratios, or the ECU will reject it!

It is from a V6 Xantia II Berline - Mine is a V6 Xantia II Break. I guess the ratios should be the same?

I'll have a look at the gearbox serial number, if it is the same i think it will be good?

Hi Carsten, I would think the gear ratios would be the same. Can't imagine them being different between a Break and a Berline...

Sadly, you cannot tell much from the gearbox part numbers :(

As the converter has died on your new gearbox it is essential that the gearbox is stripped and checked. The oil filter must be replaced and all debris carefully cleaned out. I'm just doing that now on the XM gearbox and it's long and tedious...

Do carefully check the condition of the output shaft bearings. You may have seem some pictures of bad ones in my XM Gearbox Rebuild thread.

I'm just about to start reassembling that gearbox now so any advice you need, just shout!

Hi Jim,
Thanks alot for your support - It's really good! :)

Well,
The box i taken apart yesterday, following your guide.

I did take some pictures on my way, and i'll let them talk - Should i take more apart, or just leave it where it is? If there is a missing picture of something, i can take it anytime.
I'll take a look at the output shaft bearings.

The gearbox was fine and clean inside, the only sludge, as you will see by the pictures, is from the filter-removal.

Yes.. The "red sh*t" is everywhere, in many autoboxes. Hope I can "rescue" the gearbox, before something else goes nuts..

You have a decent heated workspace anyway? It is cold enough here in Scotland . Garage is freezing at -3 all day. Temps in Denmark?

We are to get + 9deg. during the week.

It's looking good in there Carsten :-D I see no issues at all...

Very good work there. Well done :-D

Do remove the diff shield plates and clean behind them, one has swarf magnets behind them and they look like this and many thousands of KM:

Image

They look like metallic hedgehogs

Renew the oil filter and both the paper and metal gasket between the converter and mechanism housing. I also recommend replacing the driveshaft and converter oil seals too. Note that the driveshaft oil seals really require special tools to refit them. There is a tapered cone to fit on the diff ends so that wen you replace the diff in the housing the seal does not squash.

If you do not have the correct tools, install the seals at the very end of the reassembly job using a suitable mandrel but be careful the edge of the seal is not damaged by the driveshaft socket on the ends of the diff.

I can show some pictures of the special tools if you wish.

Refill the 'box with oil before assembling it to the engine and to make it easy remove the speedometer drive and fill from there. capacity is 8 litres.

There is no need to open the other clutches or the valveblock for inspection?
Weird - I did not find any magnets in the valveblock cover.

Where do i get the filter and gasket from? Think i'll buy a new converter too, unless i have a chance to see if it's OK.
I've got a little 12V pump to fill the gearbox with, makes life easier :) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Proxxon-AP-12 ... 0522248490" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The filter opened:

No, personally, given the clean appearance and there being no obvious signs of burned clutch plates - you can tell that the light brown of the friction plate substrate turns black - I'd not disturb the other clutches. They will, as you have seen on my website, need the fabrication of special press plates and a hydraulic press to get them apart. I never risk taking a valve block apart. I look for broken springs/spring retainer tabs and leave it at that.

This is an example of a broken spring retainer tab.

Very interesting to see the internals of an oil filter :) That one looks on the way to being blocked. I must dissect one I have here I know is blocked so we can compare...

For spares, try AutomatiChoice. They have been excellent for me and although UK-Based, they have European offices. They can also, from the UK at least, arrange for the torque converter to be overhauled - a job I strongly recommend you have carried out. They can also supply the correct LT71141 oil as well. get enough for at least two changes to flush out the remnants of the Dextron that's been in there..

I have send Automatichoise an email - Hope they can supply the parts I need. I'm buying lots of stuff in the UK, so no problem.
What pricetag has a refurbished converter? And is there a sure way to tell it's dead? Previous owner said that the car would run fine, but the converter gets very noise after 5 mins. driving.

No broken spring retainers in my valveblock btw. :D
