It looks like your 'v' had passed the 'o' were you writing this on snow and ice?

Probably... :P

Interesting experience this evening - we had a LOT of rain today, and it was cold on the way home (like 4C cold!), and I had a very odd sensation that the car was 'glued' to the road with the new winters on the front (Marangoni Meteo HP). It's hard to describe, but I can't say I have experienced it before, and it wasn't like the grip you get on hard cornering on good summer tyres - it just felt stuck. Hope they stick that well when the snow does arrive  Oh, and they were only £60 each fitted 8-)

If anyone is thinking about winter tyres act fast, availability is already getting scarce.

I ordered mine online, they were shipped from Germany in 5 days.

Prices are going up fast too. Three or four weeks back the Michelin Alpin A4s in my C5s 215 size were £115 each, now they are £156 each!

I know there is the law of supply and demand, but that kind of profiteering on the back of road safety stinks.

On the other hand the higher prices might be for new tyres fresh out of the mould.

I've just looked up the Alpin A3's I bought, up from £56 to £68
Still, its better than Michelin UK seemingly comparing them to unobtanium.

Possibly, but the the site (http://www.oponeo.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) sources tyres from a range of warehouses. I can't believe that all the tyre makers have increased their prices within the same few days. Most, if not all of the tyres in the list of 185/65 R15 have gone up a bit.

They can't charge more for freshly made tyres, you expect fresh ones anyway and the ones I got are very recently made.

I think its a case of the supply not matching demand, so prices increase.

http://www.oponeo.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is where I got mine, I have used them three times now and they are often unbeatable for prices, have a good selection and delivery in 5 working days. My local tyre place couldn't even get me the winter tyres I wanted, I got them from there.

Could you not get Alpin A4s Chris? My sister got A4s for her C4 last winter. I have been running A3s on My Xms for a number of years now. This will be their 4th winter. Another friend got A4s for his Xm a couple of weeks ago from pneusonline.

Why not? What's to say that the cheaper tyres are not old stock from last year being sold off at a cheaper price? :?

It strikes me that rushing out to fit winter tyres already is rather inadvisable as the ambient temperature is still too high (above 7°C) the result could be very extended braking distances and a loss of grip overall, the following video from Continental Tyres explains all

If you are considering fitting two winter tyres to just the front axle the following video may put you off that idea

Given that tyres usually come from a lot of different sources, not many places stock the tyres they suggest they do, it would be too much to manage going on dates. I bought mine before the price increase and they were made 29th week of 2011.

Quite alarming that Yaris on front winter tyres only. Does rather proove a point.

Though it's for a C5 (205/65/15) not a Xantia I'm considering, has anyone an opinion of the Goodyear Ultragrip 8 winter tyres?
(or come to that, the Dunlop Winter Sport 4D)
Have four new Michelin Energy Saver tyres here waiting to be fitted, but concerned how they'd perform if the weather goes sub-zero, since we will need to go to the north of Scotland and back in the next month.

I did have winter tyres only on the front of my 607 a couple of years ago. It was tail happy if I cornered too fast on snow (tried it in a huge empty car park at work) but at least I got round the corner. It was quite fun. It didn't spin under braking but then I hadn't disabled ABS like the video.

I'm not saying I recommend it, but I personally still felt safer with two winter tyres than none.

Last year I bought two more for the back so I'm good to go this year.

I have the latest (October 2011) German ADAC Motorwelt member magazine in front of me - their 15" winter tyre test lists Goodyear UltraGrip 8 in second place behind Continental WinterContact TS830. Their comment (Google translation): very balanced, good in all safety aspects, highest scoring tyre in wet conditions.

Their complete tyre test results:
1 Continental WinterContact TS830 (good)
2 Goodyear UltraGrip 8 (good)
3 Semperit Speed-Grip 2 (good)
4 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D (good)
5 Michelin Alpin A4 (good)
6 Pirelli Winter 190 Snowcontrol Serie 3 (good)
7 Nokian WR D3 (average)
8 Vredestein Snowtrac 3 (average)
9 Fulda Kristall Montero 3 (average)
10 Barum Polaris 3 (average)
11 Kleber Krisalp HP2 (average)
12 Kumho I'ZEN KW23 (average)
13 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32 (average)
14 GT Radial Champiro WinterPro (average)
15 Falken Eurowinter HS439 (below average)
16 Trayal Arctica (bad)

PS
Actually just found an image of the test results!
