Re: Rattiva the Second...
It was a pleasure to be of assistance Jim and get back onto the spanners so to speak.
As Jim states the last person behind that dash must be living off of a diet of bananas, it was shocking to see so many parts behind the dash split, cracked and generally abused, still at least its now been put back together correctly

Re: Rattiva the Second...
And working a treat too Richard I got the car back on it's feet after you left and I've just returned from a trip. It's tropical in there now and with that lovely smell of 'eau de new matrix'
And being able to see how fast I'm going in the dark - now there's a revalation
The ECU and stepper motor (not yet fitted) are doing exactly what they're supposed to. I watched the stepper motor baking off as the cabin temperature rose along with the fan changing speed as expected so the ECU looks happy...
And so am I
Thanks again Richard, could never have done it without your very able assistance

Re: Rattiva the Second...
Today I refitted the heat flap stepper motor and gearbox to the heater box. That was a heck of a task. No room, no visibility and done using feel and blind faith After much faffing it was home and happy.
Tested and the flap moved a treat. Only trouble is - and wait for it - it goes the wrong bloody way I get lovely hot air when the temperature slider is on cold and cold air when it's on hot Sadly only either cold or hot in between
I know why it has this strange behaviour... The donor gearbox was from an early MK2. It had a different stepper motor which I noticed yesterday and so did some surgery on the gearbox to swap motors. Rattiva had her motor but only mangled and unusable bits of her original gearbox which we found lurking under the old heater box and hence why we had to use a new gearbox.
It transpires that the very late Xantias use a motor that rotates in the opposite direction from that of an early MK2...
So there it is. I have heat that can be sort of controlled from the slider but totally backwards Still, better to have heat than cold at this time of the year...
Another slight issue is that the early MK2 gearbox and late MK2 motor doesn't have enough travel to go fully cold...
I'm after a late MK2 flap gearbox now if anyone has one but I fear I may be waiting a long time...
I replaced the fuel filter today. Nice easy job after one realises the lid of the filer housing is very tight and that a mess will result however careful you are. I was heartened to see no metallic flakes in the bottom of the filter bowl. I was very careful to heed the warning of meticulous clenliness is required when doing the job...
I then thought I'd check the rear centre hydractive sphere only to find it has a C5 type on it and very tight Are these on the same thread as a standard green sphere or is there an adapter piece in there? I could not see one?
So, a none too successful day one way and another. I'm feeling it's two steps forward and one back on the heater front Still, as I say, at least it's nice and hot now...

Excellent stuff David
If you need any advice on getting it apart to replace it let me know...

We couldn't see any obvious markers on it.addo wrote:No positive ID on the dodgy matrix yet? Christmas guessing comp?
Re the stepper motor it looks like the changeover point was RP 8197 so not too late as my previous 1999 V reg HDi was 8382, the part number looks to be 6447EL, the bad news is it costs £93.01

Must be worth checking scrap yards and eBay, such a thing as the heater working in reverse would drive me mad

I can't remember whether it has the blue>red marking, or the numbers. Whichever it has, just remove it, and put new numbers/markings on in reverse.DickieG wrote:Must be worth checking scrap yards and eBay, such a thing as the heater working in reverse would drive me mad
