Yes, I agree, £1000 is minimal cost to get a good XM road going. Im surprised that includes the cost of the box rebuild too, thats petty good value!

I never add up what we spend on cars, though our XM has had that spent on it easily, my Activa has cost a fair old amount and no doubt ill be spending more on that too. Im sure I spent about £1000 on my last C5 over the year I had it. At this age they are not really depreciating, indeed good XMs are appreciating, and so your not really losing money when your spending it. Its not a great idea to spend spend spend and then sell, as you probably wont recoup it back, however to use and enjoy, it will be more than worth the minimal outlay.

Certainly more financially tolerable than the depreciation on a new car! Fancy spending £35K on a C6 for it to be worth £20K a year later  XMs were similar in their day too, we got a 6 year old 2.0 16v XM for £1200, a car which was £19,000 6 years earlier.

Ah, right, that makes more sense! We got charged £2500 for a rebuild on an autobox for our VW. I hope yours comes in a bit cheaper!

I'll make sure he does Robert..

Mind you, when he sees the cost of a gearbox rebuild he might not be able to afford a pen to write with...

Do you ever get that feeling that you're gonna be ripped off?

Anyway just dropped off the autobox.....

Nah i'm just joking it's in safe hands. I'm not too fussy when it comes back either as i'll need to save up the pennies as its not a short job in man hours so it will be more expensive in labour than parts.

I've a fair bit to get done before the box comes back as when it does the engine will be popping back in very quickly afterwards. But i was promised it would be back with me by the end of the week :^o

I've a WHOLE heap of fun coming up with re-working the LPG anyway a sane man would probably either leave it alone or block it off to come back to it at a later date. As you can tell i'm not a sane man, combined ownership of an Activa(that is broken AGAIN) and an XM does that to you.

the heater matrix join had a leak so i removed it (slid right off) addressed the hairline crack with some silicone, and upon refiting lost an o ring, my fault really, but i'm still blaming it on curse of the activa

No, it's not that. It's parked in too close proximity to an XM - that's the real problem...

not much more to report but as far as i can see i've treated and re-painted all the rust under the bonnet so the car is now ready to receive the engine....

Next up, get the engine ready for the gearbox.......

The parts shelf is building up nicely now and i've a lot of the parts i need ready to go now, only 4-5 items left to purchase. Those items though do include the strut tops, radiator and spheres so saving the expensive ones till last.

I will also be having another look at the LPG, seeing if i can reroute cabling and the injector/valves themselves to make it a neater job

It may not be so relevant in a cooler climate, but here two of the three radiator control relays (the ones above the nearside headlamp) are relatively famous for eroding their internal contacts. Prising off the cover and eyeballing them, reveals the state of play.

Intriguingly, I had the Lexia on a near-identical car Friday just gone. Heaps of faults logged - a good number of which I'd ascribe to connector issues.

It is very relevant in this country where our Councils throw salt around like maniacs in a King Canute - like way trying to banish all the ice in existence..

The resulting salt-laden atmosphere that prevails from the moment the temperature drops into single figures until it peaks above 20 is so corrosive even gold tarnishes...

Councils smugly tell us how green and environmentally friendly they are but conveniently forget how they poison anything within a mile of any road through their obsession with salt and their apparent allergy to ice..

Only today I see bloody B and Q are already selling the filthy bloody stuff so soon not only will councils be spreading the evil stuff but so to will gullible joe public

So yes Adam, very relevant!
