Guys, there's been a bit of misreading here. It's the MAP I bypassed. Not the MAF or the FAP. I just pulled it out of it's hose in the top of the intercooler, left it connected and plugged the hose.

Opps!!! Dear dear I fear old age and dyslexia are I fear creeping up on me :-(
I would have to confess that I mentally confused MAP and MAF because I was thinking about something else MAF related but how that ended up as FAP I dread to think......

Interesting that the ECU doesn't appear to detect the anomaly between an engine turning at say 2K revs and the MAP sensor only indicating ambient pressure, I would have expected the firmware to have a background routine monitoring sensor inputs against other parameters as a check that the indicated values are not wildly in error.
