Oh no, the back wheels are caving in...

Post by Crossman »

Hi,
I have a Citroen ZX Volcane TD and have noticed the drivers side rear wheel rubbing the plastic inner arch. Taking a closer look it seems the wheel is starting to buckle in, on the nearside I can just about get my hand between the rear wheel and arch and on the other its possible to get my foot in !!!.
I know the rear bearings have the tendency to go, do you think this sounds like they are broke? I'm fairly technically minded, can handle general maintainance, but the thought of dismantling the rear suspension has me bricking it... [B)] [:(] I'm at Durham, North East. Does anyone know of anywhere nearby that specialise in Citroen and can sort this out, because I'm well out of my depth if it is the bearings, and love the beast too much to let it go [:)]...
Thanks,
Crossman.

My zx has the same problem i.e. rear wheels leaning in but they dont rub yet. I have spoken to a citroen specialist about this and he said that its acceptable to have some negative camber on the rear wheels, but to think about changing the beam when it starts scrubbing tyres away quickly on the rear. My left rear has scrubbed away and its done 80,000 and the right rear has done 30,000 is okay.
He also said that when bearings in rear suspension go they tend creek.

Like Citman says, shove a fresh axle under it rather than having it repaired, when the tyre starts to rub on the body its too far gone, the replacement parts to repair it will be expensive as its not going to be just the bearings now but the shaft aswell.

I'm just a bit bothered about it going through my tires one of these day, and doing a couple of spins or worse... [B)]
So, it looks like trying to track down a rear beam. Are they all the same as in 3 and 5 door, and volcane and other ZX's because obviously I don't want to part with hard earned cash only to find my suspension out. Forgive the questions, I’m a bit green when it comes to torsion bars etc…
Is it worth getting the bearings changed on the new(er) beam, as I could be buying another dog?
Thanks again,
Crossman.

I had the same problem on my 205 gti and i'm sure it will happen on my ZX TD at some point :-(
The bearings are cheap but I found on my 205 that by the time the wheel started rubbing on the inner arch the outer bearings had completely (I mean COMPLETELY) turned to dust and the actual suspension tube had been damaged so new bearings had no where to actually sit, it was beyond repair so I fitted a new axle. If the bearing surface is undamaged new ones can be fitted if they are it's a new axle.
