Thank you all,
I must add I was not driving when I had my head in the boot; such contortions are past for an oldster like me. Will hopefully do other hub and look for any wear in sub frame bushes suspension arm bearings over this coming week end. As regards brake backplate noted top mounting bolt on r/h side has been sheared will also anchor this by drilling a 6mm+ hole and fit a new bolt and nylocnut above were the sheared one is. Do not have any untoward bangs knocks etc when going over speed bumps. Will keep you informed as to how I go on.

I wonder if the missing backplate bolt was causing the plate to oscillate and thus set up the droning?

I've just been out in my xantia and my suspect drive shaft drone "sounds" like its coming from the rear like yours damn. So in respect of broken back plates or bolts I have neither of these.
Will be getting the wheels off the ground to check out bushes and bearings, and will get back to you all.
Mine noice becomes more pronounced "not noisier" when braking from speed clutch depressed or not ?.

Have you tried changing the wheels round, some poor quality tyre treads can be noisy?

Also directional tyres fitted wrongly can do the same.

If you fitted a new hub then it won't be that - I'm very surprised you got it off withouth pulling the bearing in half though

So, it's the car fooling you - it's either the other rear one of one of the fronts. You should be able to feel / hear some roughness in the suspect bearing with it jacked up. Whilst normal wisdom says that wheel bearings go quiet when unloaded (ie a RH bearing goes quiet on a RH bend) - I had one go in my first Xantia, and that went quiet when loaded up. But that's Citroen for you

Duff ones in the Picasso were just noisy all the time!

Thats it another sensor.
A sensor to tell you the bearings are worn out,we dont have enough sensors to go wrong on our cars.
So i'm just applying for the patent as i type.I will make a fortune at £55 per sensor x4 per car i'm rich,and everyone will have to get there lexia upgraded for the new sensor fault code.

So, how best to fully diagnose it? Jump in the boot and get someone to drive me at 50-60mph while I listen for the noise?

There's been a pulsing vibration for a couple of months too.

That sounds like an out of shape tyre, lift the wheel off the ground and spin it.

No, it's disco music through a subwoofer.

When you've got a few bits marginally out of whack (say, driveshaft, wheel, tyre on different sides) they seem able to drift in and out of mutual phasing - probably due to different rates of rotation. Hence a pulsation can occur.

Did as you suggested also reanchored brake back plate. Cleand and repacked bearings with grease fitted to r/h side and lo and behold runs smooth as can be. Amazing was totally convinced noise was from l/h side just shows how sound can confuse us many thanks to all contributors for your helpful suggestions.

Well, that's good news Jim.

I guess we all have trouble at times, tracing noises to their real source.

At least you no longer have to drive with your head stuck in the boot
