Maybe it's time to scrap road tax and put it on the pumps.
Couldn't agree more and I drive around 20,000 miles a year. Another thing to consider, for the future is what will be the 'classic cars' are we saying here that anything over 50 years old is a classic, or anything over 3 years old is an old car? If that's the case, then I've bought an older car that's going to get older, but NEVER be a classic....

:rant2: Do you know what, I support things like this petition because one day, I hope to have a 'Classic Car' and no matter what HM Government say's it will be a Classic Car, because it is old and the car itself will have earned that status, and because there won't be many around, and because of it's style, and, well just because...... :rant2:

So, I thank you for your support, or not, it's entirely up to you..........
Steve

Yes :D

What about a 73 Marina is that a classic? How about a Lotus Carlton? Any M3 or M5? You can go forever, at what point does a car become a classic, take a look through Practical Classics and you'll see this debated all day long about every model of car.

Its just a rule get over it.

Since when has tax been fair?

The benefit in having a recognised concession for classic cars, is indirect - that's why Authorities don't see it.

After all, very few of the potentially road-going 30+ year old cars are in daily service, or would be.

What rolling exemptions do, is foster a real group of careers related to keeping these vehicles roadworthy. If your classic is cheaper to put on the road for those 3000 miles you may drive it on a good year, the saving can go to your bodywork bloke, with whom you spend more on fettling it; in turn with more customers like you he can afford an apprentice.

So, to me, it's really a fair dinkum employment generator - rather than some wishy-washy government scheme to get people off the streets (and how much has this been shown lately, to lack consistent result? ) - so I do support the idea of official concessions for classic cars.

Well my 61 Landie is of course tax exempt. Thing is guys, peeps will bust a gut to get a TE Landy and pay over the odds .

The reality is that the spares and repairs to keep and restore these vehicles leaves the 200 quid tax as a drop in the ocean in all honesty.

Don't forget that if you only use your classic for a couple of months for shows in the summer you can send the tax back in.

Only works nowadays if the car is in your name but IIRC it works out about £15 a month for a CX GTi Turbo 2.

Exactly Franklin, when I've owned a car I only use for the summer such as my Cobra I just taxed it for 6 months from April or may depending upon the weather at the beginning of the year.

I have some of my cars taxed for a month only in the year. I'd rather not have to pay though, but its a small cost in the whole scheme of things. Still signed the petition.

Its even more economical to buy 12 month discs and refund them. NEVER buy 6 month discs, they have a 10% levy on them that isn't refunded.
