Very early S1s (93/94) had the chevrons on the bonnet rather than the grill too.

S2: Better headlight output,

VERY usefull storage bins located in the door pocket under the door handle lower part,

NO Kepypad immobilser, were you need to enter the bloody code everytime to start the car,

RF Locking, so you DO NOT need to point the Fob accuratly to lock the car, on

SX upwards cars, auto wipers, and CD Changer in the boot plus boot spoiler...

Longer oil service intervals, though this is not always a better thing too...

Flash,

If it is the 1.9TD make sure you know when the timing belt was changed,
depending on the make of belt between 35,000 to 70,000 miles change belt.

Any doubt change immediately :)

So, the reality would be - in absence of a watertight service history - immediate replacement of strut tops and cam belt as neglect of either can spontaneous render the car uneconomical to repair...

Our thread starter might do well if he factors in these as part of the buying price.

With the cam belt change, also change the water pump, they have a sneaky habit of failing not long after the belt is changed if you don't, meaning you have to do the job a second time, and they're only about £25.

S1 diesels with the keypad can remove it with the engine running which disables the immobiliser (don't forget to inform your insurance company, it should not affect your premium), and then can fit an earlier/later oddments tray.

ok,

how do I check the front suspension so it is not going to spear?

Do I just look at the top mounts on the wings from under the bonnet. Are they usually not coverd by a rubber "glove"?

Make no assumptions other than the worst.

Series 2 cars - unless the strut tops have been replaced with those from a Series 1 or are MASSIVELY corroded, will not "spear".

Series 1 cars - unless you have a receipt for new parts from the last eight-ten years or so, should be assumed in danger of failing any time now.
