Jim, i'm grateful for your replies at any time, no apology ever needed.

As it is i've commenced jury service today so only have late eves to get anything done and even then the weather needs to be on my side, which it hardly ever seems to be these days :(

CitroJim wrote:The grey connector is one of a trinity you'll see on the end of the thick wires going to the ignition switch. One is brown (MR), the other is black (NR) and the one you're interested in is the grey (GR) one. they're virtually flat two-way connectors with big spades on them.

Sorry for the delay in responding Mike, been in London since the early hours and not long back...
Jim, the only grey connector at the ignition switch appears to be a 4 wired affair with one green wire pairing and another green/red pairing. I disconnected this from its connector block and then measured voltage at each pin as 10.3 (green pair) and 9.7/0.3 (green/red pair).

Firstly, have i measured the correct connector :? and secondly, if so do these sound about right?

Battery was reading 12.7 volts at time of test which sounds about right, yes?

No, that's not the right connector Mike.

If you follow the loom of six very heavy wires back from the switch, they should terminate in three two pin (spade) flat connectors, one of which is grey.. This is the one you're after.

As you squint under the stirring wheel they should be on the left-hand side (i.e. the opposite side to the ignition switch itself).

I think the one you attacked was the steering wheel position sensor connector (the one going to the hydractive ECU)

Remove the lower column panel for better access, the panel with the fuse box flap as part of it.

This photo may shed some light on how far down the column the connectors are...

Think I have it now. Does the wire look like a dogs lead, this one is black and white spots?

Does it just pull apart?

Edit...

Our posts crossed Jim, I have it now thanks to that photo.

Tested, and both come in at 11.87 volts so guess thats aok.

Have you ever used the harness tester?

Wondering what to expect or if it even functions correctly on the workstation.

Looks a mighty piece of kit though. I'm enthused because I've got a box of breakout cables that I couldn't see a use for, its all coming together gradually. Just need to crack this one and get her revving again though!

Still got this problem, just need to bring it back onto the radar now that my jury service is almost over (ends tomorrow, i'm into a third week today  )

Roll on tomorrow and some dry weather

All contributions welcome.

I intend to plug in the harness tester from cold, that's me not the harness tester :) , will it prompt me for any discs cos if it does i'm snookered.

I've got Lexia discs up to v37 I think (its a pukka lexia2 workstation)

No I don't think it will, they are normally only asked for when looking at wiring diagrams. When you plug the harness tester in nothing will happen without you going into a separate menu. As I haven't done this for a while I can't recall where you go but keep poking around and it'll pop up but in order to use the tester correctly you need to have the diagnostic manual so that you can enter various codes relevant to whatever you are testing.

Aaah, that's right. You'd said you might have the relevant diagnostic pages available for me to use

No hurry, i'll not be fiddling till the rains stop which atm could be some time yet, cheers!

You wont need any additional discs & yes the electronic breakout box doesn't test anything automatically, you have to cross reference the wiring diagram & manually input each pin you want to test, it can be very time consuming compared to the manual breakout box which is soooo much easier & quicker to use. Do you have the right adaptor that plugs into your injection ECU ?

I have got the blue ecu breakout box, think RIchard is going to check for a copy of the diagnostic pages.

Instead of plugging the test harness into lexia you plug it into a manual box & you can test things direct with a multimeter, you can also bridge wires & power up or earth wires, you cant to that with the electronic one.

Looks good :)

Is that a genuine citroen part (part number?) or a third party box?

Thats not even a Citroen one but it's a similar sort of idea, couldn't find a pic on the net of a citroen one. I think the one in the pic is for Ford.
You cant buy them new anymore anyway, they only have 126 pins in them & some of the modern control units have more than 126 pins in them so no good for modern control units. The only unit compatible with the newer ECU's is the electronic breakout box for Lexia 3.
Mines is at my mums house, I need to pick something up either today or tomorrow so i'll get a pic.
