V6 aux belt change
Moderator: RichardW
While waiting on tensioner (ECP NEXT DAY.........poor show GSF) I am going to strip the old belt and the tensioner off.
Now: When belt is off can I start engine to test if noise is still there ?

No problem with that.
Its not as if you'll be driving it around so no problems with the HP pump not turning. Only other things you'll lose is the air con and alternator. Again, of no consequence if you're not driving it.

Run it and cant' hear the noise now.
Toby: Was this the item you got for £60 ?
I will change the roller next to it as well as the belt. The dual mass pulley seems ok although it is 14 yrs old? They are pricy though.

That is the one.
If you have any doubts about the crank pulley, do the paint test. Draw line or two across the diameter and then run the car (with the belt on). If the outer is slipping relative to the inner section the lines won't align.
If you're having trouble finding it I'll give my local GSF a ring and try to obtain a GSF part number.

Still don't see why we are buying that whole assembly when the roller simply screws off.
The bearing would press out but I think it would be an automotive item only.
The bearing itself has a recess machined out to accept the torx bolt............not any standard bearing I fear .
You would think that a similar roller would be supplied by INA and used somewhere on another car however.

Seems that it IS on another car.....Mine!!You would think that a similar roller would be supplied by INA and used somewhere on another car however
Having removed the other roller it measures up exactly the same as the one from the assembly.
As my crank pulley seems ok and the Sanden AC seems quiet this only leaves the Tensioner itself. Do they wear? Do they give problems?
Mine seemed to keep the belt tensioned ok but was thinking of the top hat bushes in them. My roller bearings seem rough to me but they move freely.
Could the tensioner have been a source of any noise?

I'm starting to think there are different parts between the V6 engines now.
I'm pretty sure that on my Coupé, the roller measured up the same as the tensioner pulley, but it would not fit.

No doubt Toby. Vive la differance between Pug and Cit.
Just tried it on and seems ok. I should be able to walk in and buy these bits aftermarket.
Still thinking about that tensioner. The thing did not seem absolutely "true" the way it was sitting........maybe they are like that. Any experiences appreciated.

Right:
2 new rollers and a new belt...............noise still there
Needed done anyways as belt was cracking and rollers past their best.
The locking assembly with the 2 shouldered nuts? Having levered the the plate down against the spring tensioner and tightened up I cannot get the bottom bolt to go right home where the slot is cut. It wedges it's shoulder against the narrower part of the slot.......instead of going into the larger of the holes. Is it supposed to go in the larger one?
Try as I might I cannot get the movement on the plate to put it in there . The belt seems tight enough though.
Noise could be hydraulic pump?

Turns out I just did not have the amount of tension needed on the damper.
Thinking I could put a lever on it that would leave more room to spanner the lock nut underneath, this happened.
£66 just like that!
For the uninitiated the big 21mm nut is welded to a plate . It is only there to obtain purchase. For me to get someone (Mrs lexi) to hold down while I get underneath with wheel and all trim off and lock up the no 2 nut I made up these.
That has a huge lever.
Then for me underneath. This was a ratchet spanner for £3
That has a 16 inch handle on it. 10 mins should put the new vibration tensioner bit on properly tommorrow .Not that it will cure the noise .....or will it?
As for an easy job?............it will be next time

All done and no surprises that the whistling is still there.
Any other ideas welcome. Whistling water pump? Whistling Jack Smith?
Anyone got a step by step rundown of doing the cambelt?
And: HTF do you get that casing out that the ecu sits in.?
When working on V6 Xantia do you have to be in touch with your Marquis de Sade side
