As veg oils lubricate more than derv and have fewer impurities, there's more chance of your car lasting longer on veg than diesel.

Your options probably work very well in Cambridge where cycling is fairly easy and the terrain is nice and flat. As for buses, living in the country and working in the middle of nowhere (as I do) it would take me 2.5 hours to do a journey that takes 25 minutes by car, EACH WAY! The cost would alo be in excess of £7 per direction.
For me, veggie is the best option.
