Plain bushes at both ends of the shaft on these pumps. Lubricated by the diesel (which fills the whole inside of the pump). Cannot imagine the problem is with the pump bushes.

As the noise is there but it isn't getting (at the moment) any louder, I have decided to let it carry on until such time as it gets a whole lot worse.

The car is only used for local short journeys these days, so fingers crossed it will keep on going for a long time yet.

My big problem is that I have big hands with fingers that are now suffering from quite bad arthritic pains all of which makes working in tight confined spaces such as under a Xantia's bonnet, very difficult for me to undertake, so for the moment it is fingers crossed (ouch) that Claude keeps on running.
