:D good news then. Worth giving the primer bulb a really close scrutiny for split/perished rubber, when it's off. Interested to know what you find

If you are anywhere near a boating area the chandlers will have the bulbs for about £8, so I am told.

That should do the trick admirably.
I haven't personally but I know of a fair few people who have bought them from ships chandlers and found them to be a perfect replacement at a much lower cost than automotive outlets.

Screwfix also sell them! They don't feel of brilliant quality but it's a Lazer product, and doing a fine job on my car currently.

I may be pointing out the obvious to you here, but it's worth mentioning in case you weren't aware (I'm sure you are though), they are directional, with an arrow on, you want the arrow pointing towards the fuel filter housing.

I expect these marine sourced primer pumps are for petrol outboards with remote tanks. Would the quality of the rubber material be ideally suited to diesel use? Obviously they do work, as Dean says.

If those symptoms persist, there's probably another air leak somewhere to be cured. If not, it's just residual air being purged that was still in the system.

If you're willing to risk more test drives, I would let it idle up to normal temperature then take it for a sprint through the gears. Any air ingress should be apparent within half a mile or less, IME.

From past experience long ago, I'm always wary of the seal achieved using tiny jubilee clips, say on pipes less than 3/4" dia. Used to find on tightening that the worm thread part stayed rigid, and thus the clip itself became non-circular. Further tightening seemed to make things worse. Just a thought.

As Mike suggests, maybe a leak elsewhere?

You raise a good point there Martin, it's also essential to use the right size jubiless clips as too large and they won't seal.

Many despise the clic-clips used by PSA as I did initially, until I got the proper tool. Now I prefer them over jubilees, so much quicker to use and always makes a secure seal.

Candy, head to B&Q, buy some clear pipe and run it from the primer to the fuel filter and some smaller pipe from the filter to the pump.
There are so many places air can get in, the primer-filter pipe, the thermostat at the bottom left side of the filter, the o-ring between the filter and heat exchanger, the filter lid, the elbow that comes off the filter lid, the size adaptor on the way to the pump and then the banjo on the pump itself.
Without clear piping you won't be able to diagnose the issue properly.
